I’ll have to give a real view here.

Ben Keays is an extremely limited footballer. Has gotten everything out of himself and has been great for that Crows side. But at some point you need some finer details taken care of to elevate your list to the next level and he could be one who is in and out of the side as Adelaide progresses its build.

Impeding Keays DEFCON12 on the lions board :eek:

I agree that that value looks spot on. How do Adelaide get such a pick given their position, its hard to tell. The suggestion of a late second this and next year is not very appetizing either.
Adelaide with tumble back down the ladder next year, once they get faced with a top-6 fixture!

Crom are still trotting out 'Lachie Murphy' in big games, Keaysy and Cal can co-exist for a while. Basically just means rankine and rachele do more mid time.

Meh, I don’t think State of Origin is indicative of rugbaleeg more widely…it’s its own entity

It’s similar to suggesting that Melbourne Cup numbers mean that mainstream Australia supports horse racing more than [insert mainstream sport]
Not at all, your right in that the Melbourne cup is just a one off event, but you have to look at how many times a rugby League event appears in the top 100 shows, games and even panel discussions pre-and post games. It's a big TV sport across country NSW and Qld and people from those states that have relocated along with the Kiwi's and South Africans.

I prefer AFL to watch but League is a good game for TV with the nice rectangular field and the game basically played in parallel lines.

A couple of things I've heard on various podcasts.

Drapers partner was central to him choosing Brisbane, as she apparently has strong links here.

Ripley isn't leaving Essendon (think this was from Ralph on Midweek Tackle).
hope it's just an ambit position but Brad Scott on 360 last night was adamant they would not trade Ridley, the context was he was really shaken by Merritt having met with Mitchell, and am guessing if both leave his own position is quite precarious.

Precedent is definitely there in recent years for clubs to be enforcing contracts following an initial expression of a desire to leave: Dunkley, Papley, Daniher, O'Keefe. Essendon basically had no depth in their backline the whole year (partially down to injury) so I can definitely see them putting the proverbial foot down. Contracts have to mean something.

"James Aish will either be playing at the Lions or he'll be going into the draft, he won't be traded, that I can guarantee you,"
Not saying for a minute that it doesn't happen. Cameron, Neale and Dunkley for us are evidence enough. But the expectation that under-contract players who nominate a club will end up getting there is unrealistic.

Will be awkward for Essendon to keep a player who has experienced medical negligence (for the lack of a better word) from club doctors and who wants out because of it. Would not be good for their culture.

Restricted Free Agents can’t go through the PSD. If matched, they must be traded for or enter the national draft.

This is correct - I lost count of how many times I explained this to WC fans on the Starcevich thread

As soon as an offer is matched, the PSD becomes irrelevant

Tricky thing is West Coast chased Starcevich with no intention of lodging free agency paperwork (unless they got that BS exemption).

I don’t think that’s true because as soon as Brisbane offer an RFA like Starcevich a contract then the PSD is out of the question…the ND or a trade are the only ways an RFA can leave the club if they’ve declined an offer from the club that holds their rights

My understanding is that the AFL specifically wrote the RFA rules this way to prevent the PSD being used as loophole - these are literally the ‘restrictions’ in Restricted Free Agency

Under the rules that were agreed between the AFL and AFL Players Association (AFLPA) in February 2010, Restricted and Unrestricted Free Agents may consider offers from rival Clubs during the post-season free agency period, following the 2020 Toyota AFL Premiership Season.

Under the AFL Player Rules, an Unrestricted Free Agent may automatically move to the Club of their choice.

An offer to a Restricted Free Agent may be matched by their Club. Should their original Club match the offer, and the Restricted Free Agent Player does not wish to remain with their original Club, they must enter the National Draft or seek a trade. Compensation in the form of AFL allocated draft picks will apply to clubs with a net loss of Free Agents, based on the formula determined by the AFL.

Matching Offers

A contract offer is matched if the football payments and ASAs are equivalent under the offer and the contract proposed by the player’s current club. To qualify as a matching offer, the player’s current club must make an offer on the same terms as the new offer tabled by the player including:

  • Contract length;
  • Base payments;
  • Total match payments;
  • Total ASA payments;
Total performance incentives based on AFL awards or honours, club best and fairest finish or games played (not including finals). Any incentives for team performance do not have to be matched. A player cannot table an offer to be matched for less than a two-year contract length.

I think the complexity comes with the fact that West Coast won't lodge a free agency bid for him. Not sure what happens in this case

But to be clear. And I want to be clear. Crystal clear. We shouldn’t have let Keays go.

Starce would have to go along with a PSD threat. Not sure he would assuming we were being reasonable.

Sydney's chairman just came out and said if the AFL changes the academy bidding selection to lockout elite talents to northern clubs, they will severely diminish their investment into their academy and their sponsors will drop out. Looks like a direct threat to the AFL then. Hopefully the lions come out and say the same thing. Our silence on this matter is actually disappointing. I'm also still not hiding my disappointing over Greg Swann.

Unlike Sydney, we have more pressing issues to worry about

Our Academy is probably the most important thing about this club. Likewise, we should be a team that is full of queenslanders. That was the purpose of it, and having the lions being a team that is truly queenslander would help the growth of this game even more in Brisbane and all across QLD. The club should be fighting hard for this, because i don't want the best QLD talents to be playing in Melbourne.
