Our Academy is probably the most important thing about this club. Likewise, we should be a team that is full of queenslanders. That was the purpose of it, and having the lions being a team that is truly queenslander would help the growth of this game even more in Brisbane and all across QLD. The club should be fighting hard for this, because i don't want the best QLD talents to be playing in Melbourne.

To be fair, I'm keen on us doing more Bruce Revile type recruiting than rely on premium talent. I believe Academy is proving its worth more by picking up rough diamonds and then enhancing them to the players they are today. Coleman, Reville, Payne, Brain all fall in that bracket for me. It feels like more meritorious to be honest.

Since there is no restriction beyond round 1, I feel we can continue to harvest on our investments potentially and build out that Queenslander team. It just doesn't have to be first rounder queenslanders like Gold Coast have lucked out so far.

VFL supporters don’t believe that academies are largely funded by private funding and sponsorship despite the Swans academy being called the ‘QBE Swans Academy’.

Or the fact that Youi and Hyundai sponsor ours. Only the AFL would be dumb enough to cut off a pathway system that is paid for by sponsors.

The draft lockout isn't just for academies though. It's for father sons and NGA's as well. So if this goes through, we wouldn't be able to get players like Fletcher or the Ashcrofts anymore.

has met with Brisbane Lions’ senior figures as part of his attempt to start a new chapter up north.
Ridley, 26, has family in Queensland and has recently spoken with the Lions in a bid to join departed Essendon ruckman Sam Draper at Brisbane next season.
Ridley would fill a key void for the Lions as an A-grade intercepting and rebounding backman who has been severely hampered by injuries throughout his career, playing only 19 games in the past two seasons.
The meeting with the Lions is the first major step in Ridley’s efforts to depart the Bombers next month as captain Zach Merrett also explores ways to join Hawthorn under Sam Mitchell.

Essendon is trying to block Ridley and Merrett’s departures and quell concerns about the club’s on-field position and key relationships within the club including coach Brad Scott.

There have been no discussions about what a deal for Ridley could look like, while Draper’s exit will either net the Bombers a first-round or end-of-first round draft pick.

If Draper’s salary tips over the $900,000-a-year mark, it could hand the Bombers picks four, five and six in this year’s draft as part of a best-case scenario.

Ridley has been frustrated with the handling of his soft-tissue problems which has resulted in multiple recurrences as well as the club’s overall position as it heads to the draft again.

Essendon is adamant it can keep Merrett and Ridley to their contracts for next season and that their differences with the Bombers can be fixed.

Laverde has not been offered a contract extension for next season and is set to join GWS Giants.

Essendon has put its faith in its new high performance team after a devastating run of injuries in recent seasons in a bid to help prevent a player exodus.

Draper’s offer at Brisbane is believed to be around $850,000-a-season which could fall marginally short of the tier-one compensation mark about $900,000-a-year.

If the Lions upped the offer to Draper, it could strongly enhance the Bombers’ draft position with another top-six draft pick.

Essendon would likely ask for two first-round draft picks for Ridley but the Bombers are adamant the defender won’t be released after signing a long-term deal until the end of 2029.

I think the complexity comes with the fact that West Coast won't lodge a free agency bid for him. Not sure what happens in this case

I am just a casual observer at this time of the year so can only read and interpret what is in front of me.

I get from this that it is completely up to the player wanting to move to sign a contract with a new club.
Once signed and lodged it then is up to the AFL to decide any net compensation.

From what we all read, Allen to Brisbane is happening.
So, Allen & Lions will sign a contract and lodge it within the timeframe. This appears certain.

What we don't know is if Starcevich and Eagles will do the same.
So, this outcome is entirely in the Starcevich/Eagles camp as the Lions are already committed to Allen.
If this goes ahead the AFL will decide on net compensation.
If Eagles start to waver for whatever reason, the Starch camp might say the Bombers are very keen with similar/more money. Just lodge the contract or i will sign with the Bombers as they are fully committed and will lodge on time.

The other option is Starcevich goes elsewhere
If it is to the Bombers and we get Draper, the above still applies

However, if Starch goes to another club other than the Eagles or Bombers the Lions get compensation.
That would be a good result for the Lions but looks unlikely.

I think net compensation is fair, and that is the likely outcome with one of Eagles & Bombers.

Lastly, both Eagles and Bombers pull out and Starcevich does not want a payday like at North, then he signs with Lions.

This is a good example of why the AFL have a 7-day period for contract lodgment.

Maybe the Saints come marching in late to help everyone out.

Pretty accurate. I used to follow the tv ratings scene quite closely some years back, and the ratings for weekly RL games weren't that flash. Certainly nothing close to SOO ratings. AFL games generally rated better for 7 then RL games did for 9.

Father Son won't be chopped that quickly in my view with Carlton and Essendon at the cusp of landing one each.

Your earlier post was focused on academies/queensland talent so I was responding in line with that thought.

Absolutely could do, but isn’t there a saying about looking a gift horse in the mouth.

Would those two picks be the best bid though ? I think others might come a little harder. West Coast clearly into Starcevich in a big way, don’t have to squeeze every bit of value out of everything. They surely just get it done and move on.

I like others, rate Starcevich a bit higher than a likely pick that ends up closer to 40 than not.
