PRESS STATEMENT: NEW HERITAGE LISTING REINFORCES NEED TO PROTECT VICTORIA PARK BARRAMBIN FROM OLYMPIC STADIUMS

05 September 2025
Advocacy group Save Victoria Park welcomes the Queensland Heritage Council’s decision to include the entirety of Victoria Park Barrambin on the state’s heritage register.
The listing affirms the park’s rich environmental and cultural heritage, further reinforcing the need to protect it from destructive Olympic stadium developments.
“We appreciate the important work undertaken by the Queensland Heritage Council to expand the park’s listing on the state register,” said Save Victoria Park spokesperson Sue Bremner.
"We are, however, highly concerned by recent comments from the Heritage Council Chair suggesting that the Crisafulli Government’s mega stadiums could “enhance” the park’s heritage values.

“We disagree. You cannot build two Olympic stadiums, a warm-up track and extensive supporting infrastructure while honouring the park’s heritage in any meaningful way. The two things are incompatible.
“The scale and size of these stadium developments will destroy almost everything that recommends this park for state heritage listing in the first place.
“It is also surprising that a Heritage Council Chair would express support for these proposed developments without even knowing the extent to which the stadiums will impact the park’s cultural heritage. This type of preemptive decision-making is highly unusual.
“Our firm and unwavering view is that Brisbane can have stadiums and a heritage park - just not in the same place.”

The more I read from them, the more I realise they're basing their opposition on stuff they've made up themselves.
I'm not sure what the second stadium is they're talking about, maybe they mean the aquatic centre plus the warm up track location hasn't even been confirmed.
Also, a site having heritage protection doesn't mean development is prohibited on that site.

They are a religious cult; they don't need silly things like facts.

They have pumped themselves up so much that they are on a mission from God, that they have zero ethical issues with things like lying.

Going to be fun to see what spin they come up with when the official designs and masterplan for victoria park get released

literally cant wait for the day! I was hoping for something like sascha baron Cohen in who is America and the fake mosque
Do you want this mosque or this bigger mosque

Yeah like any international architect can pull together a multi-billion tender in less than 2 weeks. The QLD govt have already made their choice and just going through the legal motions
From what i read it is not a tender process.

Any world architect firm would treasure winning an Olympic contract for a Stadium
It looks like it is two separate projects, but it could of course be awarded to the one firm.

The VP site has been known for some time now, and any large world architect firm would have been well aware of the proposed project and made enquiries on procedures a long time ago.
If they were interested, they would be well advanced in their preparation.
So, i don't think the short time frame is an issue.

It mentions:
" being encouraged to share their vision"
"experience delivering iconic projects to bring their bold ideas and innovation to the design of these future Brisbane landmarks.

I take that as a concept rather than proper drawings seeing no actual site location has been made public yet.
However, i hope they have made a decision on the site and appropriate details will be made known to the applicants.

A long post. The 100-day review now available. Well, the first time i have seen it anyhow.
There is a fair bit on transport
if you are interested in a particular venue, the pros and cons are listed somewhere in this 216-page report
We all know the Qld. government were not all that happy initially but i have never seen the letter back to GIICA after they provided their draft report to the State Government.
I will lead with the interesting letter even though it appears on pages 209-212

-GIICA recommends a world-class arena, with legacy seating capacity of 17,000, be delivered at the former GoPrint site, Woolloongabba, opposite The Gabba stadium. For the Games, the arena would be transformed into a 15,000-seat swimming venue with the installation of a drop-in pool,
GIICA acknowledges the feedback from the Queensland Government, received following the submission of the draft report, indicating that Government does not accept that the arena is essential infrastructure for the Games. However, GIICA remains of the view that a new arena would enable an enhanced event experience befitting swimming,

-A High Performance Aquatic Centre and a dedicated Para-Sport Facility at Chandler Sports Precinct

-The updated program costs are:
Stadium $3.785 billion
Arena $2.385 billion
Minor Venues $2.621 billion
Total Cost $8.791 billion

Cost

$8.791 billion GIICA acknowledges that the total costings outlined above exceed the designated funding envelope of $7.1 billion

-Private sector participation opportunity GIICA is confident that private sector participation (such as public private partnership (PPP) arrangements) can be leveraged to reduce the overall upfront capital financing requirement from the government for the major assets such as the proposed stadium and arena, subject to resolving any issues in relation to the Intergovernmental Agreement.

-GIICA is grateful for the consultation that occurred with the Queensland Government during the last two weeks of the 100 Day Review following the submission of the draft report in accordance with the Terms of Reference. The correspondence from Queensland Government dated 7 March 2025 is acknowledged and all feedback has been reviewed. In particular, the Queensland Government’s assertion that it is not practical to construct an arena within the $7.1 billion funding envelope is noted.

3.4 Public submissions and stakeholder engagement
3.4.1 Public submissions
In consideration of a major venue or stadium, 61% of submissions referenced major venues, with 44% of those mentioning Victoria Park and 19% mentioning The Gabba or Woolloongabba precinct. Feedback highlighted mixed views with some opposition to constructing new venues.

To bring Queensland at least in line with Western Australia’s number of seats per person, a stadium of approximately 61,000 seats would be required (assuming The Gabba is decommissioned). Based on the capacity analysis undertaken, a new stadium with a capacity ranging from 60,000– 65,000 was identified as optimal

Team USA eyes Brisbane’s UQ campus for 2032 Olympics training base - Rachel Riley
[USOP Committee Chief of Olympic and Paralympic Sport Senior Vice President Fin Kirwan] took a tour of Victoria Park, the RNA showgrounds and the site of the new National Aquatic Centre and was impressed by the 2032 venues plan.
“I think the proximity of the village … to the track and field Olympic Stadium and in turn the … the aquatic centre, I think that’s going to be a huge advantage,” he said.

Companies line up for a piece of the Brisbane 2032 action - Cameron Airfield
The Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games Organising Committee announced on Friday it would launch its procurement program at The Star on October 8.
Committee president Andrew Liveris said more than 50 expressions-of-interest packages would be announced at the paid event.
...
The announcement came days after the Games Independent Infrastructure and Coordination Authority opened up its own EOIs for a principal architect for the main Olympic stadium and the nearby National Aquatic Centre at Victoria Park.
A source told this masthead interest in the role in the days since GIICA went to market had been “extremely strong”.

Of course interest in it will be extremely strong, a Government contract with a definitive deadline is a license to print money for any self respecting business. The final cost will end up well over 10 Billion IMO.

Let the rorts, cost blowouts and subtle threats of delay roll.

Brisbane 2032 Olympics rowing regatta: Penrith, Sydney emerges as host frontrunner - Peter Jenkins
World Rowing has serious concerns about the Queensland Government selecting the Fitzroy River in Rockhampton to stage the prestige still water racing, The Saturday Telegraph can reveal.
It threatens to cause cross-border conflict and is likely to reach boiling point within weeks as World Rowing president Frenchman Jean-Christophe Rolland prepares to inspect Rockhampton’s site first-hand.
This masthead understands Rolland will fly to Australia once the world rowing championships end in Shanghai on September 28.
It has emerged Rolland, a former Olympic gold medallist, has called for a raft of statistics before arrival, including Fitzroy River tides data.
Despite Queensland Government insisting Rockhampton will host 2032’s rowing and flatwater canoeing, The Telegraph has been told the venue is almost certain to fail technical assessments.
Who could've seen this coming lol

Maybe this person ticks off on the venue stranger things have happened.

Politicians know best what's good for everyone so they will push their case.
The government may get stubborn and have it elsewhere in Queensland damn the costs.

It will be very cold in Penrith.
They could extend the usual number of days and have most events starting from say 11am.
I have no idea of what the usual starting time for these big events would be.

However, if you want an Olympic medal you have to go to where the event is held.
Maybe run a big event at Penrith one year before the Olympics so rowers know what to expect.

Interesting to hear Caro last night on Agenda Setters (33 minutes in) mention the Queensland Government had a significant number of representatives at the QClash Semi on Saturday night. Apparently they're looking for a "much bigger role" in the footy world post-Olympics like "Gather Round style football"

She also mentioned on a different podcast that there was no representation from the AFL commission there.

And while I haven’t followed it at all, she was also talking about the political manoeuvring behind the commission, and that there’s anti-academy block supporting one of the contenders.

Andrew Bassat (President of St Kilda) has a brother (Paul) that is on the Commission, one would assume he may be the centre of the Anti-Academy block.
