So what now for Tassy?
Nothing really... The price or cost is/was always far too high when they stipulated a domed stadium in the most expensive spot to acquire and build what they asked for...the AFL that is.
Crazy folks running the show. Who have stumbled yet again.
West Sydney is a BIG Fat failure.
The costs ploughed into there will never amount to anything in terms of kids playing or following AFL
The Giants should have been a Canberra based team from the get go.
The second time the AFL fumbled the ball with a ACT based team.
FWIW IMO V'Landy's would've been a better choice!!
The Boys club that run the AFL is a pretty useless bunch of twats if u ask me.
Too many self interests in decisions made.

Bucks should have been more committed in his approach during the Melbourne process.

He has put all his eggs in the Tassie basket, it might have backfired. I guess there will be other suitors that emerge for his services.

You have to feel for Tasmania.

They were so close to putting their state on the map but now it seems the map of Tassie will just continue to be associated with one thing. It's a shame as I would have enjoyed heading down under and watching the pussies.

They're making the right decision and standing up for themselves. They can't afford that stadium.

The afl will fold and they'll hold games at ovals they have

The premier is saying that the Tas. Planning Commission have made their assessment based on outdated guidelines, and says Parliament will make a decision based on their judgement as elected members, not on the TPC's opinion.

So they're going to bypass the state's own planning authority it seems.

Just idiocy

The premier himself is saying the stadium will now cost $1.13 billion, and you can guarantee it'll cost more.

As part of its study the TPC has determined that state taxes will have to increase by $50 million per year for 30 years 😳

The state is already in the hole for over a billion dollars with the construction of the 2 ferries and the Devonport berth fiasco.

They initially costed the new berth at $93 million, and it's now not far shy of $500 million.

The state has a population of somewhere around 550,000 I think, which probably means a taxpayer base of just 250,000 or so.

Do the math.

I think there's more chance of them building the stadium than the AFL folding. And I'm putting the odds of the stadium going ahead at about 20% right now.

Such a sweet deal for the league. Either get a billion dollar stadium built with everyone else's money or blame everyone else if they're not certifiable enough to stump up the cash. Win-win for the AFL powerbrokers, irrespective of the gigantic loss for fans of the game across the nation.

Sorry when I say fold i meant they good up on the stadium as a prerequisite- as in the fold their hand in the game and just kick off the team

Poor wording

I don't believe the AFL will fold and allow the team to enter the comp while playing at the existing facilities. They will insist on 'stadium or bust' and are ultimately quite comfortable for it to be 'bust', as this is their covert means of ensuring that any prospective Tasmanian team only enters the comp on their terms. While at the same time they pour rivers of cash into what seem to be dead ends in other parts of the country.

I just don't understand that. A stadium has never made sense. Why are they investing their own money into something that doesn't happen if the economic advisor happens to actually do the maths on it?

That's precisely the point. If everyone else had been prepared to run with their gigantic contributions to this crazy extravagance, the AFL would have been pleased to tip in a trifling amount of the cost to benefit from the infrastructure forever. As it is, they now tip in no money whatsoever and walk away wringing their hands and lamenting how hard they tried.

Win-win.

Do you stick to the status quo or take bold bets?

The AFL (probably from own experience and from other sports' experience around the world) likely know that, for a strong local presence, an all-weather modern stadium helps.

It is in Tassie's hands now. All the reasons mentioned (low population, higher cost per head of population etc.) are precisely why they should take bold bets. Assets, above and below ground, have been exploited near-fullest. Tourism has the potential to be a bigger bonanza to the state. It could trigger a whole lot of other things for the state.

An all-weather modern stadium brings Events, Concerts, other Sports etc. (read: tourism dollars). You need something to get the fly-wheel going. Influx of Settlers, Commerce and Tourists over the next few decades should be Tassie's goal. Not reducing some theoretical "net social cost". Unless they time-travel, while they may (questionably) predict primary cost/benefit, how about secondary (to n-ary) benefits?

Like Alaska, why aren't there cruises to view the icy vistas of the Antarctic Ocean? Why not reduce red tape for Driverless Cars, Data Centres (cold temps reduce air-conditioning costs), Wind Farms etc.

"You can't cost-cut your way to greatness" - Ruth Porat

Disclaimer: I'm not from Tasmania. I would love for footy to flourish there. Footy is not an "acquired taste" there, like it is in QLD, NSW etc.

I don't think they walk away though. If I know anything about executive leadership in this country it's they are suckers for a sunk cost fallacy.

The all-weather stadium with the roof prevents the second biggest tenant - international cricket.

If they took 25% of the cost off it and removed the roof there is a much better business case for it.

Concerts are irrelevant as no major acts are shipping all their stuff to Tassie when they can just do an extra show at Rod Laver instead.

The costs are insane too

1.1b for a stadium servicing a population of under 600k. $1800 per person where the GDP is 40bn

For reference to get Adelaide oval up and running, with a bunch of heritage listed brickwork that had to be worked into the new stands, cost 565m and services a state with 1.5m people. $375pp where the gdp is 140bn.

Hey Beveridge, here's another defender looking for a new home

And as much as Melbourne are trying to say the right things here's, let's be honest that the real reason May has been told to look for a new home is the conflict between him & the captain, potentially other players also

But it's a bit harder to say that bit publically
