According to this story: “..Trade Radio's Damian Barrett added that the reason the Saints pulled out of the deal was because they were unwilling to part with a future second-round pick..”

Who knows whether there’s accuracy to that. But a second rounder seems appropriate to me

How can you chase someone for 2 years, offer them $750k+ and then not think they are worth a future second? Very weird.

I wonder if there’s more to the story? It also comes a day after the Saints parted with Pick 7 for Flanders, which gave many the impression that they might not value the picks all that highly. So it seems strange to baulk at a second rounder now..

I think Simpkin is a good option. Pace and run through the middle is something we should be looking for.
Leadership, I think his kicking is suspect as probably the only downside with a lack of speed. There was a period there when we were known as the best contested ball team in the league…north really took it to us, Simpkin was a reason.

They explained it clearly. Trac wants out, and Dees are okay with it. Suns are not okay with Humphrey going (as of yet). Basically they're targeting a gettable player and keeping their own talent that's under contract. I'd want our club to do the same. Just because we signed Houston (a contracted player) doesn't mean I would want the club to just bend over and let Daicos leave.
Point is though that for the past 2 years now they’ve actively pursued contracted players (Rioli, Noble, Trac) and are now getting shitty when other teams are pursuing theirs.

Or maybe Gubby has finally realised that a Salary Cap isn’t a Hat made out of a long green vegetable and has subsequently had to wind things in?

They were discussing this Aleer thing on trading day, and saying how strange it is to pull out 6 days before the end of the trade period
Sure they dont have the currency right now, but get other clubs involved, do pick swaps.. there is usually a way if you want it enough. This is from the club that courted him for 2 years, got him to agree, and then suddenly they decide they had no currently left to do the deal? feels a bit all bizarre.

ain’t nobody believing the trade cost is why saints pulled out of the Aleer trade. Overpaid for silvagni and forced to up $ to Wilkie. Pretty obvious
Hmm maybe but seems wildly incompetent for a club to come out one week into the trade period and reneg a verbal offer.

If your logic is right, and it might be, then I would have thought they should have been able to back out a few weeks ago?

I reckon they have eyes on someone else. Time will tell, I guess.

It's why I'm not fully on board just yet with the money aspect being the issue. The financial commitments from other players plus improving Wilkie's deal all happened before trade week started. So to then get halfway through the trade period before pulling out is odd - UNLESS they anticipated there being more interest in Steele and easily moving him on.

Starting to wonder if something has come up elsewhere unexpectedly.

They've run out of money haven't they? 🤭

They still had until Wednesday to negotiate with Giants.
