This is why you started negotiations high. Not sure why Brady is so late to the game with this tactic.
Because this might be the first time in recent dealings that Brady holds the upper hand, just about every other trade we've been desperate to get the player and the opposition know it. With both this and the potential Aleer trade, things are actually in our favour.

Part of me agrees with you. But then again, we are desperate for experience, go after blokes like Parker, while happily giving away a player in his prime, a captain no less? Doesn't make a lot of sense. And taking his wage off our books is hardly a pressing need. Who else are we going to pay, that we couldn't otherwise? Not to mention, there is every chance that part of his contract will remain on our books as Collingwood won't be able to fit all of it under their cap.

All I can is nobody at North would have thought about trading away Simpkin four weeks ago. He put himself on the market. Now we are presented opportunities we didn't have earlier and have the blessing of not bothering to do anything if we choose not to. I just heavily suspect if an eventual trade was less what we said (not that we've ever come out and said two first rounders is the value) and more than what they are parroting then nobody in our club would think we got rolled over on it.

A subtle shift in the narrative delivered by no other than the AFL's favourite boys. Let's see where it goes from here.
Twomey and Beveridge are a bit more professional than most afl journalists.

Where do things stand with [PLAYERCARD]Jy Simpkin[/PLAYERCARD]?

By Marc McGowan, Michael Gleeson and Peter Ryan

North Melbourne captain [PLAYERCARD]Jy Simpkin[/PLAYERCARD] was unhappy about being pushed out of an inside midfield role onto the wing late in the season despite having some of his most prolific performances there. Collingwood have expressed interest in Simpkin, but the problem is brokering a deal.
On the move? North Melbourne captain [PLAYERCARD]Jy Simpkin[/PLAYERCARD].

The 27-year-old dual best-and-fairest is contracted until the end of 2029, and the Roos don’t need salary cap relief, so there is little incentive for them to trade him. North told the Pies they would need two first-round picks to budge on Simpkin, who is yet to request a trade.

That stance might soften, but Collingwood’s best pick this year is No.39, so they would have to use future selections or trade with a third club. The Magpies are reluctant to entertain trading one first-round pick for Simpkin, let alone two. Simpkin will likely stay at Arden Street, but there is time for that to change.

"Market Price" as a concept is somewhat illusory.

There are 2 relevant prices - the price the purchaser is prepared to pay and the price the seller is prepared to accept. Sometimes those can be massaged/negotiated to the point of agreement, which is the classic definition of "market price". BUT if another buyer comes in and is prepared to pay more, then suddenly you have another "market price". In quick succession you have 2 different figures.

The only relevant figure from the seller's point of view is the value they themselves put on the asset. If someone is prepared to pay's overs (or at least seller's value), great - sell. If not keep.

Question is therefore what is Jy's value to us.

My concern is that whatever value we might extract would not prise out an equivalent or better trade to us. Best we could hope for is hitting the jackpot in the draft (ie a maybe rather than known).

There's a couple of big unknowns in this whole thing - how bad is the relationship between Jy and Clarko? And do senior players actually want him back at the club as the reality of this has sunk in?

If it's really bad with Clarko, one reason you'd still keep him instead of accepting potential unders is because Jy will need to play well in 2026 to attract interest this time next year. He might not talk to Clarko all year but it's in his interests to play well. The second reason would be to show other clubs that the club doesn't just cave in (anymore). Third would be to use the year to speak to multiple clubs and get the best deal in return, not rush a deal through with one club.

However, the reasons to accept unders (if it's really bad with Clarko) would be to avoid a disgruntled ex captain bringing the whole atmosphere/vibe down; or him undermining the new leaders, forming cliques, causing rifts etc.

If senior players don't want him at the club as sh!t has become increasingly real, Brady might not be in as strong a position as we think.

If Collingwood didn't want him and wasn't prepared to explore a deal to get the picks they needs for him they would have already said so.

"Collingwood has explored its options regarding a recruitment of [PLAYERCARD]Jy Simpkin[/PLAYERCARD] and based on due diligence will not be progressing with his recruitment"

Missed a little on that PR piece

"Collingwood has explored its options regarding a recruitment of Jy Simpkin and based on due diligence will not be progressing with his recruitment after watching his Clanger and Momentum Lost package from 2025 that ran for just short of an hour.”

They’ve had ample opportunity to walk away.

Instead they’ve engaged the media shills to run their lines.

They’re balls deep.

I think they seriously thought they would get a cheap mid-trade period salary cap kill. Probably made promises to Jy too. Bit of a self made crisis for them.

Let's be honest here, Collingwood would've been in his ear for minimum 12 months, none of this stuff happens overnight.
They rate him, but previously they could say but we don't have the assets to trade accept our offer North. Its all we have..

The landscape changed when the AFL wiped how many firsts a club could trade, now they are just sulking. He's not worth that much yada yada yada.

"Collingwood has tried to bully North Melbourne via the media into accepting a lesser pick for its Captain Jy Simpkin and unfortunately it hasn't worked. In previous dealings with Brady Rawlings we've been able to bend him over, but not this time. This doesn't auger well for the competition"

I still find it completely bizarre the way Jy has handled this. I don’t know what role his manager has played, but if you assume he’s there to serve the best wishes of his client, he and Jy have really ****ed this up.

It seems as if they did **** all groundwork and the result for Jy is that he doesn’t get what he wants, and also makes himself look a bit of a penis.

I'd argue this one the other way.

Collingwood want to grab an off the books listing from an old granny who is happy to stay put.

Pay up or FRO.
Sure but if the relationship between Clarko and Jy, or Jy and other players has really deteriorated, we actually may need to sell up. The place may have black mould and Brady is doing his best to pretend it doesn't, not letting people look under the carpets, but he knows this place has to go.

As I explained last week, Trotter played no part in this and in fact expressed dismay. This is all on Jy.

And there you have it he will stay, but not as our Captain
