Recommitted Zach Merrett [UFA 2027] - Wanted a trade to Hawthorn, but it didn't get done

Why are still bothering trying to reason with these people.

Probably because someone had to.

The same few posters just keep recycling the same lines, and all the reporting this week (Morris, Edmund, Trade Radio) has basically backed up what I’ve been saying for two weeks.

Anyway, if people still think “Essendon haven’t picked up the phone” was a wild take, they might want to check this morning’s Tom Morris report before hitting reply.

Merrett camp realising both Essendon and Hawks at an impasse.

Morris as their spokesperson has flip flopped in whatever direction they attempt to pressure.

Notice how he always posts as if the pressure is on us to sell him to just do the deal, rather than the hawks to pony up and pay the overs to get him.

As transparent as a ****in fishbowl this bloke is.

Neither of those picks will be top 10 post academy.

Especially the 26 F1 which could end up in the 20's.

All discussed picks are subject to academy movement.

The Suns proposed offer is Pick 7 and 8 for Petracca and 24. With 24 coming back, that is the exact points equivalent of Picks 9 and 15 - which is basically the exact offer of Pick 9 and F1 (our first this year, after a great finals run is pick 15 - with next year's draft meant to be stronger).

So essentially the reported offer for Petracca and Merrett is exactly the same.

That's not even factoring in that Gold Coast and Hawthorn have different assets available to use and that Gold Coast are easily the most generous pick givers in the competition, as they have been gifted so many and have multiple first rounders coming in every year thanks to their academy.

He has said time and time again 'it will take an exceptional deal from Hawthorn to get him'

I think you are just heating what you want to hear

Great to see Sydney put in a great offer for Curnow. I guess we will wait and see if Hawks really want Merrett?
Curnow that is 18 months younger, plus a key forward which is a lot harder to find than mids. Plus the swans wanted pick 22 back.

1 first round pick, a pick slide, Hayward and Florent? That is a great offer?

If this is the going rate for Curnow, what's the going rate for an 'in the window bigtime if they get him' Merrett?

Swans offering starting 22 players + first round picks

That’s how a real club chases a contracted player

Absolutely, either HTW is making things up again or using confirmation bias.

Keeps making blanket statements but the actual reporting doesn’t back him up.

Tom Morris has said multiple times — both on Trade Radio and Footy on Nine — that:

Essendon aren’t entertaining offers right now.

Hawthorn would have to put together an exceptional, “godfather” style deal just to get them to the table.

Petroro is trying to bring a third club in to help make that happen.

Those are direct quotes and reposts from Morris himself.

So unless he can point to a source saying the opposite, maybe he should stop throwing out claims that contradict every credible update we’ve seen this week. I thought it was against forum etiquette/rules to constantly repeating falsehoods about what is said in the media without backing up your claims.

9 + a FF + a fringe player is a more than fair deal IMO.

You are either intentionally misrepresenting that trade offer or unable to understand it.

You would be happy with 1 first, a pick slide, a role player and and a 27 year old fringe best 22 player?

He’s selling you more magic beans Roby. Don’t buy them

I think if your biggest offseason victory is not losing a contracted player then there are a few lean years ahead.

I've maintained Hawks will walk away if the price is too high - we've got a history of this. We're a realistic club and it's worked well for us over the years.

I still think it'll come together at the end and we're all getting played by emotional media types.
Look at the Swans what they are doing to get Curnow.

If Hawks can table a similar offer for Merret he will get traded but you blokes don't want to pony up instead a trying to screw Essendon over

Sydney are offering basically 1 first, a solid player in Hayward and a throw in in Florent who they are pushing out.

Future first wouldn’t be that far from 22.

It’s not that good of an offer lol.

Elite KPF > Elite midfielder
Debatable.

And besides, we're not comparing the value of forwards and mids. We're comparing what Merrett is worth to Hawthorn with what Curnow is worth to Sydney. And Merrett is worth more to the Hawks than Curnow is to the Swans.

What Sydney pay, if it all goes ahead, is gonna come into negotiations. I wouldn't be happy with the idea of Sydney giving too much for Curnow if I were Hawthorn.

The big difference between the deals is obvious - Hawthorn aren’t willing to deal any of their players (and I mean senior players, best 22).

Sydney have just offered two of them.
