GEELONG CATS

Geelong and losing a trade period is not something we often say in the same sentence. Their inability to land Rowan Marshall in reality wasn’t through fault of their own, with Pick 19 and a future second-round pick more than fair for the Saints ruck. Rightly or wrongly, St Kilda remained stubborn in their approach to keep Marshall. As for Charlie Curnow, the Cats’ hands were tied. Partly by their own doing though, given their unwillingness to throw their own players into trade dealings. That ultimately worked against again given Sydney’s openness to trading Ollie Florent and Will Hayward for the dual Coleman Medallist. On a positive note, they did bring in James Worpel as a restricted free agent from Hawthorn — but ultimately, neither of their two biggest trade targets landed in their arms this off-season.
Who the **** wrote that shit the Geelong marketing team?

“wasn’t through fault of their own, with Pick 19 and a future second-round pick more than fair for the Saints ruck. Rightly or wrongly, St Kilda remained stubborn in their approach to keep Marshall.”

Of course it was their fault. They went after a contracted player and it’s on them to find a suitable trade
“Fair” value doesn’t come into the equation you either want the player and are willing to pay up or you don’t

surely he stays in QLD?
On one of the footy shows they said he's going to put a crazy front loaded contract on his head that will scare every club other than Adelaide from taking him

What a shit comparison

Cotchin had 3 premierships as a captain and the club did everything possible to facilitate that compared to Merret that has busted his gut out and won the B & F 6 times at a club that is a disaster what more could they have asked for after promising him the world of improvement in the club when he signed.

Maybe a Deledio comparison would have been a better comparison but that wouldnt have suited your narrative
Merret gave them 12 great years and leadership and had the right to ask for a respectful departure whilst getting the bombers a great draft hand

This is totally the bombers F*** UP
I don’t completely agree

Yes the bombers are a rabble and I don’t wish them any success, but Merrett signed the deal and was happy to dine out on it

The players have too much power these days to the point that contracts have become somewhat meaningless in terms of players honouring the commitments they made when times were good

I say good on Essendon.
For holding Merrett and only willing to move him on for a **** off stupid offer

Maybe players will start to accept think about the contracts they are signing instead of just assuming they will be able to ask for a trade for a few years if it doesn’t suit them anymore

They missed a golden opportunity to start a proper rebuild by knocking back a ridiculous deal highly in their favour to keep a 30 year old that’s no chance of being in their next premiership team. Blair would not have hesitated to take that deal imo

clubs make all sorts of promises to keep their best players through feee agency. When you plans don’t deliver or sold a pile of shit the unsurprisingly players get annoyed.

I like a lot of what Mathew Lloyd has to say about stuff like this.

He said he only remembers the big finals and that’s what you play for as a player.

Like Cripps, Fyfe and Merrett all those personal accolades don’t mean much when you never performed when it counted. To add insult to injury these 3 are likely to never even got the chance.

But that’s the risk the player makes for the security of a long term deal that has the promise of money over a long period regardless of injury or form with perks to boot

If they want to play the field and explore opportunities don’t lock yourself in and take the cash
Make the most of free agency

The players can’t have it both ways

All well and good, but what was your opinion on the Rioli trade? Or any other trade of a contracted player?

My view is that if a player expresses a desire to move out then the club should facilitate that move in a fashion where both parties are somewhat satisfied. Sometimes this doesn't happen (see Ah Chee) because a deal can't be negotiated to the satisfaction of both parties.

Merrett, as captain of a club, adds another layer of complexity and one that was exacerbated by the interference of the board and President wanting to protect their 'brand' rather than leaving football related decisions to those that are employed to make those decisions.

The deal proffered by the Hawks, IMO, was more than enough to satisfy the needs of Essendon and they were foolish to knock it back, particularly when it's just a chest beating exercise by the corporates who are so called, governing the club.

They are now left with a disgruntled captain who is already on record (via Petroro) requesting a trade again next year. The ramifications of having him in the team will send ripples right through it from the leadership group down. A real upsetting of the applecart.

Meh that’s not non factor imo
Players shouldn’t be able to just demand a move like children if they are happy to take the money in the first place when they could of just as easily signed a shorter term contract or used free agency like the players wanted

Essendon had made its plans with Merrett with them and have the right to see them through

I maybe in the minority camp, but I admire Essendon standing firm.

If they were to lose a contracted captain of the club because he's getting to the end of his career and wants to desperately win a flag (with another club!!); then that is the sign of a weak club.

A new president takes over and repeatedly said he won't be traded. What message are you then sending if you go back on your word?

As for Merrett, show some love for the club that made you. The club on who's honour board your name will appear for future generations to see amongst some of the great champions of that club. Weak f'kn sook imo.

And the added benefit is that campaigner Mitchell and Hawthorn can GAGF!!

IMHO the takeaway is that the new Essendon president made a rookie error by nailing his colours to the mast.

Negotiation doesn't work that way, you have to leave wriggle room.

The guy doesn't want to be there, they had the last chance of any club to do a proper rebuild for the next 3 years.

Hawthorn were throwing overs at them but nope, Essendon still think it's 1983 and they hate Hawthorn more than anything.

They had a real chance to put out a press release, move on and prepare the fans for a new beginning, like we did.

I mean it's all good for us, they are screwed and by the time they realise it, they will have nothing to trade for a 1st from anyone.

We traded Jeff Hogg.

To me the most stunning take away is how willing some clubs were to trade away multiply first rounders in the range that some here are advocating that we split a pick and trade down to. And we are not talking for players in the early to mid 20s, but rather late 20s or even 30. Compare that for what we paid for Prestia or what we got for Deledio.

Now depending upon whom you listen to, there is anywhere between 3 to maybe at a stretch 5 five top tier talents. So unless it's a ridiculous God Father offer, we should just use our picks and select the best available. Because if this is how the other clubs are rating this draft (and that includes the suggestions that both Essendon and Melbourne might be desperate to trade up from what would already appear to be great draft hands) it is ringing serious alarm bells.

This is the crux of it right here. Blind arrogance. They Dons are still acting like its the 80's / 90's.

Times have changed boys and until they get their heads out of the ****ing sand and move with the times they will be stuck there for a very long time.

heck Hawthorn. Imagine a club given you a deadline to make the trade. **** them.
They didn't actually do that. They had pick-9 as part of the deal, and said that after 7pm, pick-9 was going to be on the table in other trade negotiations so it might be gone after 7pm. It's a very reasonable position to take. They did the same last year....Eagles dilly dallied too long on Barrass, and Hawks did a pick swap deal with the Blues. Then Eagles were stuck and had to trade out pick-3 in order to get the picks needed for Baker.

I like the strategy - makes sure teams don't sit on your offer and preclude you from looking at deals elsewhere.

Just shows the top 2 campaigners have way to much time on their hands.

There’s an inflationary effect that the afl created by adding another 18 first round picks available to trade.

And in 2yrs time they don't have enough cap space to chase NWM.lol

Sure try and work out a trade but that’s final decision should be completely the clubs call and whatever value they place on them is fair enough even if unrealistic
That’s the price of doing business

What if for arguments sake Merretts deals is heavily front loaded and Essendon already paid up 70% of the contract

Essendon should have the right to recover that early investment because the Hawks are getting a top tier player under market value financially

This could very well be the case and Essendon have the right to demand whatever they want

Just remember, it's the clubs that also want these longer-term deals too as it provides them control over the player rather than them going to free agency. I do feel like things are too much in the players control at the moment anyway and clubs should be allowed to trade a player anywhere they can get the best result if they are getting paid over $x amount, but this is the system we have right now.
