History shows most won't make much impact at all.

The number 18 is the one number I beg to differ on that point. No player in club history has played more than 150 games in this number and only the two players over 100 games. The 3rd and 4th longest tenured players in the number are Cal Sinclair and Jesse White.

For our first pick I wouldn’t have given him this number but it’s now on him to be the first to put his name on the locker and make the number his own.

A number is just a number. As Steve Wright said, it doesn't get you a kick.
However sentiment plays a part. I like that Papley was initially given whatever number, but when Jeremy Laidler retired, 11 became available, and Papley took it because it was one of his grandfather's - Max I think.

Yes it was Max

Papley didn’t initially take “any” number. He took Mumford’s 41 due to the Bunyip connection.

Obviously the number 11 connection, once it became an option, was stronger for him.

Give him 10.
Two numbers for the big man.
Not sure he can fill Francis's boots to be honest.

I was surprised to see Will Green take #45, I wonder if he will go for a lower number.

Numbers don't make you play any better to quote the great Stevie Wright when we were discussing Luke Parker getting 26
I like Lloyd has stuck with his number. He will never be overtaken as far as games. Not likely. A number is just a number only made famous by those who wear it.

I agree! Some numbers have an existing history but why do you need to have a lower number? I like that players (like Lloyd) have made their numbers their own. Easier to do that with later numbers. 42 was claimed by Fox. Mummy made 41 his own. 40 I will forever associate with Smooch. 39 belongs to both the Wiz and Reg. 38 to Pyke and COR. 37 obviously belongs to Goodes. So, no need to move up unless there is another number you covet.

I'll long associate #38 with COR. And personally I absolutely love COR. Good player and even better bloke. Very glad he came to our club. It's not all about games played and Bobby Skilton medals.

I don't think #11 and #14 are in the same league. The only number that could be compared with #14 is #37 but #14 is #1 at the Swans.

Besides, I'm not arguing about which are our most storied numbers, only saying that there's nothing wrong with a later number and you have the opportunity to make it your own.
