Unrestricted yes - no trade
Restricted - if they match - yes a trade
If I were Port, I’d match - instead of getting 1 first rounder (compo), force the trade to get more..then it’s about negotiation of what is fair.
With restricted free agency. If port match but Butters doesn’t want to stay, assume he could go into the draft with the same price on his head?
I understand all the above.Unrestricted means that there is no right to match.
If Butters was unrestricted, and he accepted an offer to move clubs, there is nothing Port can do about it.
Restricted , they have the right to match, which means they retain him.
At that point they can negotiate a trade. ( like any other player on their list , contracted or not ). The club making the original offer is under no obligation to trade.
So if a club matches, they need to be prepared to keep the player if trade negotiations fall through.

I understand all the above.
What was your original point though ?
Do you think Port will roll over and not match a Butters offer?
They will do what’s best for Port. A compo of 1 draft pick isn’t enough.
If the port matches and the club that made an offer backs out, I’m sure rest of vic clubs will line up.
If they didn’t match an offer and accepted 1 FR compo and didn’t capitalise on trading him this trade period just gone, sack the whole list management!
Well that should warn the other clubs about playing silly buggers.WILL THE SAINTS SECURE NGA PROSPECT?
St Kilda will not overstretch to match a bid on Next Generation Academy midfielder Kye Fincher if it risks impacting the club’s first-round pick in 2026.
The Saints’ first selection this year currently sits at pick 50, but that will come in a few spots after other bids are matched by northern academy clubs.
Some rival clubs believe Sandringham Dragons product Fincher could attract a bid in the 20s, but others believe one won’t come until the mid-30s or later.
St Kilda is a good chance to match a bid from around pick 35 onwards but is likely to let Fincher go elsewhere if a bid comes in the 20s.
The Saints don’t hold a second-round pick next year, so carrying a points deficit into next year could impact their first-round pick in what is viewed by scouts as a stronger draft.
Fincher was a consistent performer this season, impressing across halfback for Vic Metro at the under-18 national championships and as a midfielder-forward for Sandringham.
He also starred playing onball in a late-season VFL debut for the Sandringham Zebras, gathering 26 disposals, four clearances and six tackles.

Pretty sure someone - Ross, AB or Dilena - said we’re going to be as aggressive again next year. From what I’ve heard, we backed out because we might be on the hook for one next seasons OOO big fish.
And these players with major injury ??? marks and closer to the end than the beginning.Rounding up these deals, Curnow and Petracca were traded for three first rounders. Hawthorn offered three for Merrett.

If we really aren't in the business of making friends, we should put together a short term offer that cannot be matched.Yeah interesting.
I was listening to K.Cornes last week, and he was going on about if Butters leaves, because he is a restricted free agent, Port will match what ever others clubs offer forcing a trade.
Cornes thinks he is worth at least 3 top 10 FRs.
Be interesting to see if we do trade a future first to get into this years draft to snag mini Pou?
If that happens, Walsh potentially more likely ?
Based on this story the J.Phillipou chase would be a 2027 pickWILL THE SAINTS SECURE NGA PROSPECT?

It's reasonable to surmise that we'll have a solid dip. At that point l think it'll be more about premiership prospectsIf we really aren't in the business of making friends, we should put together a short term offer that cannot be matched.
Finally getting our own leaking out there. PowerWILL THE SAINTS SECURE NGA PROSPECT?

Praying that we land this guy somehow - would be such good cover behind Max
Also a lot about Louis Emmett who came into the year as a #1 contender. Had 25 disposals against Dodson last year
"There hasn’t been too many smiles from Hetherton since then."
"The North Albury product first felt some pain in his back while playing a practice match against the Bendigo Pioneers in the pre-season, playing out the game despite being hampered."
“Then every game from then on, it built up and then just became unbearable in the last couple of games,” Hetherton said.
Those ‘last couple of games’, the 198cm spearhead slotted a bag of five goals against the Bendigo Pioneers and followed it up with three goals, 14 disposals and six marks (three contested) against Northern Territory.
It brought his tally to 11 goals in three Coates Talent League matches, all while being significantly affected.
“I’d probably say I was about 70 (per cent), and then slowly went down to about 60-50, so around there towards the end,” Hetherton said.
You don’t think Caminiti and Keeler is enough depth to sit behind King, Marshall, Sharman? Or have you put a line through Keeler? If we took another tall I would be thinking defender? A lot of people have us running 4 key defenders in their best 23’s which would only leave an extremely unproven James Barrat as depth. I think a defender is needed for depth before a forward, plus I prefer what we have on our list over this kid.
I like Blake Thredgold as a defender but think we would have to trade back in to get him.
It's more a best available pick - Hetherton came into the season probably just behind Ludowyke and definitely ahead of Schubert in terms of rankings. Started the season crazy good before his injury. At this stage of our rebuild where our core is looking pretty set, I like the idea of taking high risk high reward sliding late picks who've missed their draft year through injury but previously had been highly rated eg. Hetherton, Ludowyke, MiniPou, Emmett, Sam Allen; and even guys who played through injury and probably hurt their draft stocks as a result eg. Rookie Derksen & can play him back, pick Hetherton in the draft. You don’t think Caminiti and Keeler is enough depth to sit behind King, Marshall, Sharman? Or have you put a line through Keeler? Wait a second. You now have a fixation on Matteaus been a disappointment? Everyone who understands football can see the extreme talent he has. Injuries have hampered him to the maximum. He will be an out and out superstar.Let's see if he can get on the field. Absolutely disappointed with his output. This is why we have won one flag in 4 billion years, the embrace of mediocrity. Fancy being satisfied with his performance so far.

But the funniest thing is you mention we embrace mediocrity but had a weird obsession with players like Weller, Dunstan and Jones didn't you? If my memory serves me correctly? 3 of the worst and players to ever wear our Jumper. You like to make divisive opinions to try to look intellectually superior. It's very weird!
