10 does not have the same opportunity as 5th.

Here are the probabilities of the new final-10

1st - 18.75%
2nd - 18.75%
3rd - 18.75%
4th - 18.75%

5th - 6.25%
6th - 6.25%
7th - 3.125%
8th - 3.125%
9th - 3.125%

10th -3.125%

Yes it's true that 10th if they win, doubled their probability from 3.125% to 6.25% (the same as 5th) So friggin what?

Under the final-8, one loss to 1st and win to 8th sees both 1st and 8th on the same mathematical probability in wek two of the finals (12.5%). That's what happens in finals.

Maybe we could have an 18 team finals series. That’ll keep everyone invested 👍

More than half of the competition now qualifies for the finals

Its simply crap

So? exactly half made it from 1995-2010 (8 out of 16). 8 out of 15 made it in 1994. There was nothing wrong with the 1994 season. It was exciting. It was the year Collingwood finished 8th and McGuane dropped that mark at the WACA in the 1v8 final.

In a 19 team league, 50% is 9.5, so that means either 9 or 10, so clearly you go to 10 (9 is impractical).

So it's essentially the same proportion as it was when it was 8 out of 16 (when Tassy joins)

This is more than half
You have to have some integrity

People don’t like change, because it doesn’t need to change. The AFL makes record amounts of money, and still goes against the wishes of those who follow the sport, by forcing through highly unpopular changes.

When is enough enough?
Of course it needs to change.

We have added (soon to be) three more teams to the league and not changed the amount of finalists. Of course it has to change. It's not a 16 team league anymore. With that comes change.

Night and twilight grand finals will never be accepted
Haha, twilight is coming and coming soon is my guess.

Personally, I hate 2:30 when it's sunny, 1/3 of field in shade, one side having sun in the eyes. Terrible spectacle compared to twilight/night.

Also how about WA fans, you think they enjoy Grand Final at lunch time?

As for wild card, why not? More teams involved now. More games to watch. Less meaningless games later in season.

It doesn’t need to change. Not one single team that finished 9th or lower has ever deserved to play finals. The top 8 is fine, extending it is senseless nonsense. You don’t need to arbitrarily reward 50% of teams in the competition.

I’ve always said, the only people I understand complaining about the Grand Final start time is Western Australians. Doesn’t mean we should listen to them, but I get it.

Aside from that, having lunch and then tuning into the footy - nothing better. Suns still up when the game finishes. Perfect day.

Forget the name "wildcard". Think of it in terms of a system which, on the basis of one week, grants a 10th placed team equal opportunity to a 5th. Or even allows a team that finished in the bottom half of the competition to win the whole thing by getting on a five week run.

Name one sporting competition other than ours that does this shit.
Great post.

Half the time the 10th placed team has a negative record/percentage over the last decade. Never gonna get close to a flag.

Compare to sports like NFL (worst record to win a Super Bowl is 9-7, a couple of negative records have made playoffs but done nothing), MLB (85-77 to win the World Series, although the Diamondbacks almost won it with 84-78 a few years back, 82-80 has made playoffs)

NHL has some fairly ordinary teams make playoffs.

You could argue the Bulldogs deserved to play final this year. They won 14 games. But, this notion of "deserving" to play finals anyway is a flawed comment, because you deserve it if you make it according to the rules.

If we had a final-6 all this time, people would say "you've had 23 games to finish in the top-6. If you aren't good enough to make it and you finished 7th, then you don't deserve it"

If you make it, you deserve it. They are the rules.

Why do you think half the competition needs to be involved in the finals series? When has a team that finished 9th ever deserved to play finals?

Which team who finished 9th or 10th should have been given a chance to make the Grand Final?

It’s never happened. 8 is the idea structure. You have 4 teams with a legit chance, 2 with a slight chance and 2 with almost no chance.

We don’t need to change that.

Except Tassie haven't joined yet???? Bring in the "wildcard" when tassie joins, but they haven't joined yet??

You cannot convince me that a team finishing in the bottom half of the ladder deserves to make finals and potentially have a shot to win the flag.

I just hate current time visually.

They didn’t deserve to play finals though, because of where they finished on the ladder lol
