From what I have seen there is a touch of Chad Warner about him with the way he plays.

It reminds me of a kid we drafted back in 2009 who told the coach he won't be playing much WAFL because he is too good, and that turned out ok.

I would rather a kid who backs himself in and says he can be the best player in the league than one who lacks confidence.

Academic anyway because he will be long gone by the time our pick comes around.

There's a pretty good chance he is still on the board at our first pick, and then a good chance we overlook him. Not in Twomey's top 30, and goes at 36 in the ESPN mock (which is basically a copy of Twomey for the first 30).

It's one thing being cocky, but this kid takes it to another level, and he might be delusional because he is only 183cm with average speed, yet thinks he is a powerhouse. Fyfe was skinny, but he had genuine height and marking ability. Warner also a good height and with real power.

A FIGJAM mentality on its own isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It’s one of the many variables that make and average/good sportsman very good/elite.
It’s whether or not they can harness it into hard work in order to prove they’re FG or they just coast cos they think they’re FG.

That's a legitimate concern, I'm also worried that Wagner will regress, he has always lived in Schubert's shadow
I'm sure he'll Handel it and be Bach Chopin it up before long. There's no Haydn talent.

Oops, should have read on - seems I was a bit slow composing my reply!

If Twoomey is to be believed, we must really rate Schubert, saying that we would forego bidding on Sweid, Ison and other academies if he is still on the board. I mean, I am a fan of his last String Quintet and his Lieder, whilst most love the Death and the Maiden String Quartet and his Unfinished Symphony....maybe Walls and Co love a good Trout Quintet?

And we also wanted Fischer McAsey 😁.

Surely Walls is playing chess here.

Hopefully North bite and get Schubert and .. player slides.

Maybe, but it also wouldn't surprise if we were actually very keen on Aidan Schubert; he plays a very similar game to a Josh Treacy (leadup and contested mark forward with some rucking, good mark, bit of mongrel and agression) but is taller (198cm), they even sound similar in the interviews. Most of the potential draftees have a lot of ???? but Schubert has also been very consistent across the season.

Has to be some 4D chess. Ignoring the fact that the last thing we need is another tall stuck at Peel, Schubert hasn't overly impressed me. Clunky mover and has an awkward kicking action - a very high ball drop, doesn’t guide it onto his foot at all. I can see shades of Sam Darcy with the wingspan and good hands which recruiters might like but that’s a very high ceiling to reach and he’ll need a lot of work put into him.

Don’t agree with the Treacy comparison above, Treacy much more explosive and physical. Schubert reminds me more of Peter Wright.

Not saying I think he’ll be a bust or anything, he’s got AFL level attributes, good lead-up player as noted. Would still be pretty mystified if we take him.

It would only make sense is if we give at least two of Davies, O.Murphy or McDonald the arse (all OOC 2026), move Nicholls to the backline and have him develop with Draper, and have Schubert develop with Cox up forward. That’s the long game.

But is he a promising enough prospect/phenotype to disregard our obvious immediate list needs?

Had a read about Schubert. He was a second ruck all through 2025 and did really well.Player comparison is Shannon Neale in one mock.his ruck stat is on par with Neale in his draft year but forward stat a lot better than Neale.. As [PLAYERCARD]Sean Darcy[/PLAYERCARD] is injured always and will be more vulnerable to injury when he reaches 30 years of age and we are doing an alternative using schubert and Jackson?

Yes, we have bigger needs in the forward line.

But I don’t think Schubert would be all that shocking. We’re clearly committed to a 3 KPF and 2 ruck set up. So outside of our best 23, we pretty much have two journeymen in McDonald and Cox plus two raw young guys in Nicholls and Riddle. We’re not exactly well set up for an injury to a Treacy or Voss.

And if you have a top 15 or so grade on him, then you take him at 26ish.

I do think picking a tall would bring in a guy like Dalton for our second pick. A more ready made mid/forward. Probably go less speculative there. Doesn’t seem like a lot of whispers for us at that point in the draft though.

Jackson is still there if we’re that desperate for the three talls…

If we rate him higher than those players then forget the bid. Although our pick is around the mark for Sweid who is a small forward. No chance Carlton won’t match Ison - as they are positioning themselves for the eventuality of a bid around Geelong/Feo. Our pick does seem a bit early for Williams. So some chance we end up with him if get to clever like Silvani.

I did like Twomey’s comments around back to back team bids. That is bidding on two Gold Coast or Sydney players, with a view to making the second bid on the player you rate and want higher.

Again it is risky approach given Gold Coast might have similar rankings and call bluff and not match.

For our pick Ison is a safe bet bid. If we rate Sweid go for it because Essendon will be under some pressure with the matching at that pick. Otherwise I hope we just select the player we want.
