Sorry to intrude but I'm bloody rapt for Billy who is my mates son and has done it the hard way to reach his dream.

He was Essendon's VFL captain a couple of seasons ago which tells you what exactly what they thought of his leadership skills at such a young age.

He moved to Norwood not knowing anyone there which shows maturity beyond his years and has played some brilliant consistant footy, he doesn't take a backward step and plays with a team 1st mentality.

He couldn't have gone to a better club when it comes to developing and looking after their players, go well Billy!!

Is his dad already wearing the Swans colours

I just typed billy cootee highlights into my browser and a few videos popped up. Looks to have good length on his kicking for goal.
You picked Hetherton as your man.

I am picking this 22 year old kid as my man.

I love his name.

I love his work ethic.

He reminds me a bit of Tom Papley. The quick stepping and snapping on his right. I'd love him to be able to exert the tackle pressure that Paps did at the same age.

Norwood coach has some very good things to say about Billy

Just one of them:

Between setting standards at training to connecting with each and every player, Sheedy said Cootee's energy and talent led him to be seen as a role model at the club.

"He's got very good confidence in himself in the best possible way," Sheedy laughed. "He is not a cocky individual. He's a fantastic teammate and a person that connects the whole group.

Gee's, that's certainly a big wrap from his coach.

I think Cootee is ready to play and could win a spot on form but will not be a frontrunner. Expect him to be depth in case of injuries etc. However, it wouldn't amaze me if Cootee took Malcolm Rosas Jnr spot (assuming you are awarding Rosas a spot to start off with). Rosas' best looks very exciting but it remains a mystery what he will actually produce. He was one of the slower ones in the time trial, albeit playing a position that does not demand a big tank. So I just feel unsure whether Rosas is going to dazzle and impress us or maybe not. Time will tell.

I think Cootee and Corey Warner would be duking it out, more similar players than Rosas? Not sure Rosas is a cert to play either.
Yep. Probably add Campbell to that.
Rosas more a forward pocket type like Papley and Hanily.
Preseason performance should be crucial. You can see Corey tearing into it. Campbell and Rosas look a little off the pace. Haven't spotted Hanily. Papley looks good.

Cootee's highlights look miles ahead of Corey in terms of situational awareness, hence why he was considered a leader so early on. My biggest question on Corey this season was can he mature past the amateur mindset of get ball and give ball without thought, rather use it with purpose (i couldn't give two stuff about his fitness application at this point) - and let's just be real, he hasn't done that, it is what it is i get the impression he's still stuck in the mindset of being a rookie amongst his peers where his job is done once he gets his hands on it. Obviously we don't know what Cootee will look like at this level yet but i'm pretty confident the difference will be noticeable.

Rosas has a long way to go before even being considered for round 1. Hardwick clearly wasn't a fan of his application, and if he's coming in close to last in the time trial despite his athletic profile then that is probably telling. He might've been disillusioned after being told to work harder, and thinking it wouldn't be the case elsewhere. Again, probably won't take too long to realise whether or not he has discovered the application required to be a professional athlete. He'll almost be a shoe in if he does, otherwise he'll be flushing his career down the gurgler in the two's. If he doesn't manage back to back games by round 5 then i'll be concerned. If he's in round 1, then he's the goods.

Good post. Corey has improved every season so let's hope he makes that step up this year to the level you describe.
I wouldn't draw too many conclusions about Rosas just yet though. Hardwick can be a right pr*ck if he doesn't like you and his 2022 highlights are pretty good so you'd imagine the material is there. If he has too much fitness to catch up though he risks there not being a spot for him.

My issue with Corey is that improvement has been nothing but physical/fitness. Ball in hand he is no different to his first touch in AFL footy.

Cootee may be competing with Corey for a spot but winning that battle will not be sufficient because Corey doesn't have a spot to take. Braeden does have a spot to lose but has different weapons and so might not be the first one to give way to Cootee. Braeden's kicking is his biggest point of difference. On that point, I'd really love Braeden to learn to leverage his exceptional kicking more effectively. As I mentioned yesterday, Braeden did finish a whisker in front of Cootee in the time trial, so Braeden isn't going to lose his spot because Cootee has a bigger tank (not at this point, anyway).

Cootee, Corey, Hanily and Dattoli will all be competing for Papley's injury spot basically. Guaranteed to have at least 7 or so opportunities based on that form line.
