Not really. Rainfall in Hobart not as bad as people think. Roof not needed and you upgrade the other two grounds for cheaper.

Cost of the stadium per head is equivalent to Melbourne building a $20m stadium. Insane cost
I get the passion of the fans.
But $1.3 billion effectively solves homelessness in Tasmania. Done.
My conscience, if I were Tasmanian, could not abide it.

I think cost per head is a very reductive way to analyse the issue.

Tassie is smaller, so to have a large infrastructure project like this will ripple through the economy by creating jobs which will increase spending in the local community (and more tax will be collected). And not just the stadium, but the football club itself will have the same impacts. It will likely see an increase in tourism too.
Building houses would, too, at the same time as making houses available.

You could do the same equation with pretty much any sport though.

We could take all the money the AFL makes and spend it on solving homelessness.

but then the footballers would all be homeless?

Yeah right, so you’ll just plonk 5000 houses in Hobart (let’s assume each house costs 400k).

Pretty simple

Guess we should cease all forms of entertainment and redirect it to homelessness.

Hope you're not going to any movies, concerts or sports events.
It is pretty simple.
$1.3 billion that's getting spent on a stadium could have been used for public housing.

Not sure what's so difficult to understand about that.

Just to clarify its currently $1.13b not $1.3b.

And $255m of that is coming from the Feds/AFL

Agreed. And here was a perfect opportunity. Spending for Olympics 2032 is another.
It’s true in principle, but not in any modern political reality

It wasn’t a choice in TAS btw stadium and homelessness. It was a choice btw stadium or no stadium. Same with Olympics.

TAS state govt was never going to introduce let alone pass legislation assigning 850m to address homelessness and poverty in the state

The whole debate was whether the symphony orchestra would be affected by noise or the view to the war monument thing obscured

Just enjoy the stadium. Take a trip down there sometime. Homelessness will need to be addressed in some other policy.

in I think November 2023, there was a Development Application submitted to Hobart Council. This DA was submitted by Amelie Housing, a social housing provider on land owned by Vinnies (since this DA, Amelie Housing is now called SVdP Society Housing). The proposal was to demolish some land on the Vinnies site and build a 5 storey building to be used for social housing, partiucally aimed at women over the age of 50.

Council Officers supported the proposal, but because 5 members of the community (in the end, 43 members) opposed the DA, for the all the usual reasons we've seen over the last 50 years (it's too big, what about the traffic, what about my free parking), it was sent to a Council meeting for the Councillors to decide on, in May 2024.

They voted against it.

As I recall, at least two of the Councillors who voted against it had previously spoken out against the Stadium, they had spoken in favour of more hospitals, more housing, attends protests, and yet when a social housing project (with something like 75% of it's funding being sourced from the Federal Government), they voted against it, because it was too big.

This has a happy ending, kind of. After everyone dunked on these Councillors, they quietly approved it a couple of weeks later at a private meeting after the applicant made a couple of changes.

And then the local residents took the project to the Tassie Civil and Admin tribunal, and the applicant had to make more changes. But it finally got approved, in January 2025. A 5 storey social housing building took over a year to approve and required repeated concessions from the social housing provider.

$1.3 billion doesn't **** if everyone in Tassie is still afraid of tall buildings, be it football stadiums or homes.

I understand how the debate was framed and that homeless people weren't prioritised.
It's done now.
