Couldn’t we say the same about Thomson Dow and others who have had as much chance as MRJ and are gone?
I just don’t think he’s got the elite ball use skills you want, let alone he doesn’t get it much in the first place.

Dow had one trick, he was good off the deck and looked to have a great hand-pass, which didn't ever eventuate. Rioli has elite speed off the mark, so that is something we do not have in the middle of the ground.

Don't get me wrong, I am pretty critical of him as a player, but he has one trait that separates him from many, speed. Combined with his defensive pressure if he improves his offensive work he might turn the corner, I reckon he has this season to prove it or he will go the way of Dow.

As I stated earlier the ridiculous support for MRJ is unbelievable. What have we seen in spurts? 5 years of low possession and disgraceful disposal. Runs on the board at VFL level mean nothing when he's not replicated it at AFL level. This is not about respect for our players. It's about respect for performance. You have to earn respect in AFL and his performance so far is nothing short of RS. Unless his contribution to the team improves out of site, his next phase is delisting.

What is so bad about wanting a kid to make it? Granted his performances at AFL level have been frustrating but as long as he is on our list he warrants being supported. Now nobody is saying that posters can't be critical, but instead of being abusive when doing so, it would be great if posters spoke about them the same way they would expect someone to talk about them and that is with some respect. Surely that's not that hard to do.

Yeah … outside of his 43-minute chat with the RFC head of recruiting immediately after the draft, he really didn’t deliver much of value this draft period.

And I do something really novel … when I see something from Michaels that doesn’t interest me, I don’t watch it. When I see things like an interview with Rhy, an in-depth discussion with Dylan Alexander whom I rate etc…, then I tune in.

I'm not trying to match Rioli v Dow by position. I was pointing out that Dow was better performed than Rioli overall but was moved on.They're both bog ordinary players that would not get a game at a decent side. So I'm questioning why you'd persevere with Rioli. He's on the list for this year so I'll hope by some miracle he actually comes good and provides some value. All I see in Rioli is a player with speed who will chase ferociously. He appears to have no other redeeming AFL features. He cannot kick over a jam tin, has disgraceful disposal, is a poor decision maker and has extremely low possessions in a game. I was pointing out the idea of playing him in the midfield was nonsensical and that he should have to earn the right to play midfield.

I think he's a bust and Richmond should have been rid of him. I'll keep my fingers crossed that he some how turns it around, but I just can't see it. I think many on BF show blind faith in a player that has had ample time to show they are good enough. Probably because they declared the player would be good or a star and are not accepting that he's bombed.

He may well prove to be the failure you're saying, but for me, he’s shown so far to be a decent small forward AT TIMES. Always seemed to fade in games, and needs to kick a few more goals imo.

Having watched the training videos and the comments from Caesar on PRE, who attends most training sessions, it appears on face value that the penny has finally dropped with Rioli, and he’s the fittest he’s ever been at this time of the pre-season.

My only worry is how he comes back after the Xmas break, but I’m hoping he does what he did after the AFL season ended, get involved with a personal trainer and work his ass off. Apparently, he has been up the front in some of the full ground running drills at training, so hopefully his endurance has reached the levels required to perform at AFL level. If it has, and he fails to perform again this year, then yep, he will be gone I’d reckon. But until then, I’ll support him.
