I like it in theory as long as it’s implemented without me handing my ID over.. either way kids will find sites to use
Kids will drink, kids will drive, kids will steal, kids will take drugs, kids be violent to others.
Why implement anything to protect children, if it isn't perfect?

Have you ever had to show your ID to buy alcohol, or to gain entry to something? To travel?

If we're being hyperbolic, I guess I'll say that I'd be happy to be forced to show my ID to access social media everyday, if it meant one less child rape.
You?

Why have them? People are tech savvy, and will find a way, one way or another, to get around them.
If you throw a net into the sea fishing for flatheads, do you consider yourself successful when you catch 1 or 2 flatheads among 1000 pieces of flotsam, a few whales and sharks too?

What level of privacy do you support?
It varies depending on the grounds for it.

There are so many more important areas where our privacy is lost, that we'd be better served fighting against. Than this.

Data scraping. Social media.
I've got more of an issue with anything that profits from the selling of our private information, than this attempt to reduce harm to children. Which is something you've pointed out you care so much for. Reduction of harm to kids.

What level of privacy do you support?
Should we have a drivers license? Passport? Proof of birth?
Should these things be required to identify yourself as an Australian Citizen?

That's a point. Inasmuch as saying that anyone against the social media ban only does so because they want access to interactions with under 16s...
In theory it's a good idea. It's just complete dogs breakfast in implementation

Ever heard the quote "If something is free, you're not the customer; you're the product". That's social media in a nutshell.

All of those have a place. Should I be required to show my D/L to a cop while I'm walking in the city? Absolutely not. Should I be required to show my D/L to post on social media? Hell no!

I show my D/L when I'm pulled over and asked for it while driving, my passport when I travel, proof of birth hmmm, can't think of a reason why I would...I look old and ugly enough without showing evidence that I'm over 18!

Right...

If you choose to drive, you need to be able to be identified, and to share that identification with certain bodies if requested.
If you don't want to have to do that, in general, you can choose not to drive.
Walking in the city doesn't require a drivers license.
Driving does.

If you don't want to have to share your identification to certain social media platforms, don't use those platforms...

You're not being forced to show people your identification. You're being forced to identify yourself if you choose to access some platforms.

Again, it's the same as the anti-vax and anti-mask stuff.
You're not being forced to wear a mask, but you can't enter this shopping centre if you're unmasked...

Do you trust in your mates with you ID? No
Why woud you trust the Govt with your ID given the constant data breaches?

The Government are the one's who supply you with the forms of ID...

They already have this information...

It's the whole reason for these forms of Identification...
They wouldn't exist if not for Government...

I'm genuinely surprised by your stance.

Can we take this discussion to the Vic threads, because I'd love to see your view on the following:

Sure. But first, what's my stance on this?

Most of the people I speak with irl support the ban. I think banning U16's from social media is ok in isolation (if that was all the legislation lead to), but it's a slippery slope.
Saying slippery slope will have you labelled as a rwnj, slippery slope has been cancelled.

Thanks for your attention on this matter.

The circle of life has once again ate it's own arse, ouroboros style

The nerds that run these social media companies are the people that should have been bullied in school, forever ruining their self esteem and becoming quirky accountants with middle manger aspirations; Instead they became richer than Mansa Musa and inflict their penile envy on the future generations. Resulting in overall more bullying(rationalist rubbish and so on) through these social thingies

Bring back wedgies and being locked in the bathroom by the year 11 full forward.

School is about understanding/navigating social hierarchies, in a slightly serious point

Albanese/Labor are not left wing.

They have more in common with, and agree on more things with LNP than they do with the Greens.
Honestly the Greens feel more libed up and just throw out the odd socialist policies that they never pursue. They win votes on the cuddly stuff.

Apparently the Labor right (of all things) has a Stalinist edge sometimes. But yeh neolib as the day is long, left is dead in the west and has been for a generation

You do realise this info is handled by a 3rd party, right?

I will never submit ID or facial verification just to watch YT or go on a site like Twitter (not that I'd bother with the latter anyway).

It appears Wells is done. It’s pretty abhorrent when you look at this in isolation.

The issue is that this would be widespread across all sides of politics.

And assuming she goes, just watch Labor swing into damage control and Band-Aids rather than using its huge majority to enact legislation to correct this cancer once and for all, which would earn the approval of pretty much every voter.

indeed ..... conservatives going in hard on this will want to make sure there are no skeletons in their 'entitlements' closet

by-the-by - the single most egregious entitlement exploited by politicians is accommodation - exposing that unjust rort would blow the joint up (and the holier than thou tim wilson would be front of queue)
