The highlights reel I posted were as I received them, that's how they were edited by Ch7 back in the days, so if his 67 GF goal wasnt in there its cause Ch7 didnt put it in the higlights package.
Partly also because I rarely had the ball....

Hey Vdubs , 3rd and final request , can you put Billys goal up , midway through the 1st qtr of the 67 GF please - so everyone including Rhett the historian can see what a class goal it was

About 3 minutes in, half way through q1

I come in peace.

Will need to be clicked on to zoom.

Highlighted = VFL/AFL/W players.

I have an Ancestry account and this allows me to cross reference and see if there are VFL/AFL relos.

I've also got 2 more of the same but one is quite tenuous and the other I'm quite confident on.

Grew up listening to the Cats' games at home or in the car with 3GL's (later K-Rock) Footy Team: Ted Whitten, Brian Brushfield, Peter Pearson, and Peter Le Grand. Miss those calls, if only they could archive recordings of some of the famous games online.

Liked him a lot, but a poor kick for goal iirc.
He was a poor kick at goal, but he was still a better kick at goal than Peter Johnston.

Brian Brushfield used to drive me crazy. He had a habit of declaring that the Cats could not lose the game when they had a 3 or 4 goal lead. It was almost like he was stuck in the 1950's before the modern game.

I come in peace.

Thanks for bumping the thread mate - simply because i got to watch Billys great GF goal again

3:20 in Sam deals with Don Scott? the way we were all taught in those days.

There's a clip of Newman at Arden Street absolutely ironing out a North player with a raised elbow that he definitely didn't see coming. From memory it was on the "Sensational Seventies" DVD.

Edit: Found it. About 1 hour 30 minutes 15 seconds in.

Historical value if nothing else. There aren't that many games from that long ago around. I'll take anything they've got. Great to see Newman in his 2nd game too.

I watched that 64 game - and like you i will take any game from that era

But watching Newman - how mobile he was - and Farmer once described him as a screamer of a mark - and he was - you could see that in that 1 qtr - one grab marks

Geel in the 60s had Bill Ryan at CHF - he was ok , but a terrible kick - and he wasnt quick - Gareth Andrews on a hff wasnt much better - shocking kick and slow

If Geel from the get go in the 60s had only put Newman at CHF ( and the proof in the pudding is 1980 - 16 years later in his 30s with banged up ankles he kicked 5 goals at CHF at Arden st on Ross Glendenning ) - you know with Newman and Wade as your key forwards - Sharrock and Hynes on the flank - and a couple of other nippy blokes and Geel would have won 2 more flags in the 60s - Newman would have been an all time great at CHF

There were alot of dumb clubs back then with their team selection , until Ronald Dale in 1970 at Carlton - he was the 1st clever coach with team selections and moves etc

2 examples of what i consider dumb team selections in 1960s in GFs - Rich who beat us narrowly in 67 - they had their 2 ruckman in Patterson and Ronaldson , but their 20th man ( didnt come onto the ground ) was 6ft 6 inch Mike Green - why would you have another ruckman as one of your 2 reserves ???

Collingwood were equally as dumb in the 70 GF - they had their 2 big ruckman in Len Thompson and Graeme Jenkin , yet their 20th man was Big Bob Heard ( another ruckman ) a 6ft 6 inc beanstalk and as slow as treacle - you are very limited where you can play him , i think he came on with 10 minutes to go and gave them absolutely nothing . Where as RDB he had Teddy Hopkins as one of his reserves a nippy rover type came on at h/t and kicked 4 goals and won them the premiership

True that- was hoping for an awesome comeback, but realised I'd been to that game.

Sammy was an awesome ruckman and follower though, and we needed him there after Polly left.
Do you remember Chris Mitchell?- #8, a very good ruck as well.
Sammy carried that team with Goggin into the dismal 70's.
I was at that Arden St game, brilliant game by Sam. The papers said that he was the key to Geelong's flag chances, if we could wrap up his ankles, protect him from injuries.
Now he's in a really bad way- about to have further surgery, but nowhere near as badly as Crackers Keenan is doing- about to have a below knee amputation!

This interview put a smile on my face; yet another great upload from Youtube's Rhettrospective - an episode of Grumpy Old Men featuring the late Peter Pianto as a guest.

Amusing anecdotes from Bob Davis and Pianto (when he could get a word in!) recollecting that Golden Age 50's Geelong team. A little bit of footage, not much, from the 1955 Semi (we lost apparently) against Collingwood - Davis and co. yak over the top of most of it but they're quick to point out this or that player when they're paying attention.

Peter Pianto is introduced as a guest at about 24 minutes 20s into the above clip.

A lovely video. Pianto's comments about statistics is on point. Over the past 20 years it's made commentators boring and lazy, and most supporters galahs spewing the same crap. It's unique to our game, certainly not, but it's true all the same. What good are high number stats if the effectiveness/impact and value of them on the game is near nothing.
