We've been all about the future for a long, long time. Eventually there's got to be more than just positive signs and feeling that we're moving in the right direction

I'd offer a 3 year extension that kicks in as soon we win a final in 2026

Edit - a non-wildcard final I mean

The bolded is all addressed with a review at the end of 2026, that comes with a 1 year extension.

As to your 3 year extension, there's no need for that. If we are doing a 1 year extension, decent chance that never kicks in if he doesn’t win a final.

If we have a pay out protection, I'm okay a 1 year deal.

IF, why would he be in a hurry to sign that?

-Less media attention for him in 2026
-Financial motivations. Could easily up his 2026 and 2027 salary to more than cover what he would lose by agreeing to a minimal pay out.

With Darren Burgess off the books, the above would be pretty easy to do. You could even bring forward someone else's money from 2027 into 2026 to cover the minimal pay out in 2027.

My initial reaction was 'this is bullshit'. The more I think about it, if it's a 1 year deal, there's not much downside. Would need pay out protections.

The club get their year of no media talk, which they evidently value. They get to let him go if needed at the end of '26, no to minimal impact on '27 soft cap and Nicks is looked after financially.

We could just sack him now, that will stop the media speculation all year too.

Honestly, someone needed to pay for our finals debacle last year, either him or VB should've got the arse

Agreed, but it's not happening now.

If we put the protections in place, ostensibly Nicks is all signed up, nothing to see here. Reality is we could cut him at the end of 2026 as though he isn't contracted.

I don’t trust the board to not be petrified of external ‘why only 1 year off a minor premiership’ noise. If he’s extended it’ll be more than 1. And his agent will be leveraging our weakness, there will be no payout protections. But there’ll be a few of the usuals saying that there is as if they’ve actually seen the contract.

I'd be okay with a 1 year extension with easily put in place pay out protections.

Nicks gets looked after and we have flexibility.

I can't cop a multi year extension before round 1.

Written back to front

They dont want him out of contract while aiming for finals , because it will be a distraction

I think some of the clubs board might be having doubts on him but not ready to move him yet, but if he gets more than a 1 year extension, this will be disproven
It 100% won’t be a 1 year extension. Min of 2, probably 3.

IMO

Should we start a book when the announcement is?
After what happened last time, they are not going to wait till the season starts in case we get off to a bad start.

There’s no way the Crows want to do this again in 12 months time. A 1 year contract is what they offer to an aging Walker, not a coach. That would be seen as an insult surely. Lock me in for two or three years
