Removes the distraction and nothing stopping us from replacing him if he doesn’t hit whatever benchmarks we set. Not particularly enthused but it’s probably a necessity.
Agreed. This changes nothing other than stops noise. If we drop an egg next year, I wouldn't expect this extension gets in the way of moving him on one bit.

Exactly but it doesnt satisfy the BF board or the people on here who have wanted him sacked for 2 years .Simple question have we improved in the last 2 years ? Yes we didnt win a final and i get that but id rather be in our position than north , west coast , bombers , port etc

I think it's more likely he's getting a pay rise in 2026 and then minimal pay out at the end of 2026 if required. He gets looked after, we have flexibility.

Means 2027 soft cap has minimal impact.

I don't see how us paying him more money benefits the club whatsoever if we have to sack him at the end of 2026

Stops the noise?
So we are 1-4 to start next year and all the questions are why would you extend nicks before the season?

It's essentially bringing forward pay out money into '26, instead of '27 when he's gone (if required).

New coach contract isn't hampered.

With Darren Burgess off the books in '26, it's what we should be doing.

Bump his '26 pay up, negotiate a smaller than normal pay out. Nicks still gets his money, '27 soft cap has minimal impact.

I'd prefer this than paying him out 6 months at the end of '26 and it seems pretty simple.

No way we’ve thought about payouts if we’ve extended.
Any doubts and you don’t extend early.

It still screams of a "we're not sure" type deal, which is not a great position for us to be in with a coach entering his 7th season in charge.

And I guess it depends if they did write any stipulations into the deal or not. If we get the deal done now and it means we get those stipulations of having minimal guarantees he actually gets that 2027 year vs waiting half a year, we're looking good and it's "I want that 2027 year guaranteed (and maybe more)" and we're potentially on the hook to pay him out if we then sign him and we bomb out in finals in straight sets again.

So basically it could be a good extension if they were smart enough to protect themselves or it could be a silly move where they've potentially written a cheque that's due in 10 months time.

If we've upped his '26 money, he's agreed to a minimal pay out if required, then what's the risk?

We cut him at the end of '26, the '27 soft cap has minimal impact and Nicks gets his money.

He's already locked in for 2026 with previously agreed money. So under your system if we needed to sack him at the end of 2026, we've just handed him more money for no reason.
