Test Surely the Cummins/McDonald captain/coach setup is the worst in Australian Test history

Posted this in the match thread, but thought i'd post it here as well.

Trying again to ask the question of if McDonald ever does any actual technical coaching? Is he a team manager, a strategist? What does he do??????????

Khawaja out AGAIN playing his absolutely diabolically stupid "jump in the air" shot instead of a regulation forward or backward defence. Why is that I, as a coach who has coached only to U17 level, can see this - AND MCDONALD CAN'T!!???

Should have been in the nets post the WTC loss facing ball after ball trying to work on getting his feet and head steady and grounded.

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO obvious.......

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO frustrating........
It's kinda funny seeing you continually double down on a terrible take.

So you obviously think he's out there helping our batters overcome their technical weaknesses then?
I think you made a thread that was laughable to start with, got shown to be wrong consistently, and instead of admitting it you're continuously doubling down because you're committed to this narrative. Speaking as someone who saw him whilst he was coaching Victoria, yes I do, but I suspect someone who turns 39 in December probably won't change their technique that much. But sure, talk to your coaching record instead.

McDonald would do everything except the technical stuff. They have specialist coaches for that, and many have their own personal coaches, too (like Warne always going back to Terry Jenner, for instance).

Time for these coaches to start earning their pay then!!!

Just bumping this up, again.

It's a bit boring, but so is the whinging about wokeness.
Cum-dog is an absolute legend.
Brilliant yet again.

And another bump.

Captain in for one test to help finish the job.

Terrific post match presser

He's definitely not our best ever captain.

The sweep shot meltdown in Delhi derailed what was a pretty good chance to come away from India with a series victory and two mini collapses in the 5th Ashes test stopped us walking away with a 3-2 series victory in 23, and then obviously the Stokes worldie at Headingly in the 2019 series gets them out of jail or we get that elusive away series victory that would be another thing Cummins would be able to hang his hat on.

Tactically I don’t think he’s anywhere near it but he’s a bees dick away from being able to hang it up and have done and won literally everything.

Tactically I have my issues with him, but you can't dispute the amount of times he's put the team on his shoulders on the field performance wise and that has to count for something.

Better captain than Punter? No way, but the record does speak for itself.

That’s a reasonable assessment, although the tactical shithousery was what largely allowed Stokes, and Leach, to do what he did.

You can’t fault his record but , wow, there are times when he just does pretty dumb stuff tactically. I find it hard to believe that it’s a “Ron’s plan” thing. That’s a cop out, Ron isn’t out there.

His record would’ve been even better if not for a couple of the brain fades.

This is where I sit with it, as a bowler as captain he's been immense, undoubtedly the second best Aussie fast bowler of all time and only injuries stopped him challenging McGrath.
Punter was better, I think tactically Clarke was better with a much worse team

This is true, but I think it's more a symptom of the era, test cricket around the world is terrible right now there's only a handful of competitive series

one thing you really must credit in pat's favour against historical captains is how healthy this test side seems culturally. the players seem genuinely close, they never berate or belittle opposition, they support eachother. i think sometimes this irks the older school fans as they've been raised on AB, Chappell, SWaugh.

Bit of revisionist history of Punter as a captain, he was ok, but basically his record was great with a great side then not so good when many of the greats retired. Tactically Tubby and Clarke were the best since I’ve been watching since 1990.

Role of a cricket captain is a bit overrated though, this current side has the bowling to compare to our GOAT 99-07 side but not the batting, that’s why it’s not as good, regardless of who was captain.

Remember how hated Clarkey was for a fair while?

Cummins just annoys some culture war warriors who see “wokeness” in their morning coffee.

Clarke for me was the best tactical captain I've seen. His field placements were aggressive, he set ambitious declarations, and he utilised Johnson far better than Ponting did.

Shame he was a bit of a tool though.

Tim Paine was captain in 2019.

Yeah I think with what they had to work with and the way they played Clarke was clearly the best captain I've seen for Australia, he easily had the worst team and was by far the most proactive captain
