Player Watch #12: Jy Simpkin [Part II] - staying at North in 2026 + won't feature in leadership group as Larkey set to be named captain

No haha. It's 2025 though, facts aren't as important as feelz!
Lol.

You got me for a second.

I know Collingwood  can pay Jy unlimited funds but did't think they'd be brazen enough to ever try doing it inside the cap.

Financially a player is actually incentivised to be on a crap list.

I'm surprised no player has actively chased the wooden spoon dragon. With the salary cap model you could keep shifting to the club with the most cap space.

I wonder who the first player to get done by insider trading would be??

I think it near impossible for him to have a bad year in 26, based on two things, 1) he can play. 2) Every chance we've 6/7 players getting games they don't deserve, will make him look pretty good.

And yep I can see us trying to move him on next season, my hope is we have improved on field performance and we can trade for a player, sick of draft picks. We don't need them.

He wants to leave and knows the external view does not match the internal value.

He needs to rectify that in order to leave.

i think that’s what we will see.

He’ll need to log a fair shift for his brand next year.

If more personal factors come into play there's also a chance his form collapses into a pile of dirt. Ego hit from failed trade, 'stuck' here on a 50 year contract, other clubs don't value him etc. He's a strong personality and has an edge to him, so I think it would take something major for it to happen, but I won't rule it out.

Hopefully he has a great year, regardless of the impetus for it. Getting the best out of himself, wanting to prove people wrong, desperate to attract a reasonable trade offer... I wouldn't care which it is, just have a good season and we go from there.

Hopefully we win some games of football.

I don’t mean like the pish we’ve turned out.

Win meaningful games of football and create a view of a future.

It would solve a great many things.

This thread is going round in circles but I'm not sure he's as desperate to leave as some are making out.

What I saw is a bloke annoyed that blokes like Powell and a hobbled Sheezel were being prioritised over him. In my view, that grievance is fair enough on both counts. The caveat is that as captain, you do not then go looking for other options; you instead stick at it, do your best in the role you have, and maybe draw the coach's eye. So there's a bit of Yin, a bit of Yang at play here.

If we have a successful year I can see him staying on. What constitutes a successful year? I don't ****ing know. Two wins? My expectations have been so thoroughly ****ed up by this mob that I don't know which way's up anymore

Agree with Powell though, I like him kicking inside F50 over Simpkin. I'd take Harry with one leg over Jy, I can't be alone thinking this.

...We'd get a bit of a NDIS windfall and carer-allowance category funding which would probably allow us to turn a profit too, gotta take the positives.

Hobbled Harry got priority over Captain Jy because he was still better.

No funny business involved.

Collingwood were quite happy to take over his current contract, so they must rate him. What seems to be lost in translation is that the Pie figured Jy would demand to be traded as the relationship soured beyond the point of repair. North would then be forced to trade a contracted player for unders just like we did with Jason Horn Fabian. The relationship with JH Fabian was toxic in the end. We gave up and to quote one B Rawling, " **** him off, and let's move on".

I've a had a chat with someone who knows Jy well, and apparently while disappointed he didn't get traded, isn't exactly hating North either. Was nervous about how he would be received at the club, which is normal I suppose.

So like us all, I'm not sure what it means for his 26 campaign. I'm hopeful/confident he'll had a good year and then at seasons end I'm sure all parties will reassess the situation.

And again if we can win around 10 games in 26, we will be attractive to opposition players. Rather a trade than draft picks. We really don't need anymore youth; 21 players under 40 games, is about 10 too many.

I know what you'd take. I disagree, I think Simpkin is a more effective mid than Powell and should've been tried there once it was obvious Sheezel had porridge in his boots

He did. But, it was his first year as a Mid, at some point that has to be taken into consideration.

I agree with DY (to a degree), he certainly wasn't electric like he was previously but he was still damn fine. Although like you intimated, his kicking wasn't as flash.

He played mid throughout the second half of 2024 in probably the best patch of sustained form by a North player in recent memory. And we all rightly lauded him for that so I don't think it's right to say it was his first year in the position this year.

Anyway, Jy is dead to you and several others. I hope he bounces back. Not for NDIS funding but because we're better off with him in the team than without him

Maybe, but he has to play forward pocket, he still has something to give (potentially) in that spot, but Wing, palease.

Surely we're not that dumb.

We just send him to the highest bidder. He doesn’t get freedom of choice in this situation he has created. The AFL wants the american shit, we send him to the other side of the country if it means we get a better deal.

Cant wait for that day. The AFLPA reminds me of when I was working construction back in the height of the CFMEU. Our wages kept rising, we sat in the sheds more for trivial reasons than ever before when most of us were pretty happy with the current situation. Fast forward a couple of years, sites were full of subbies as long as they had CBus, and paid their dues, where as before they were hunted by the shoppies. Companies paying EBA were getting beaten on price by up to 50% and eventually the whole thing collapsed.

I know the media blames the recent corruption within the CFMEU for the downfall, but tbh, the root cause was greed and power tripping.

To bring it back to the AFLPA, they have all the power at the moment and are taking the piss with it. Just reminds me of the late 90’ through to the naughties in construction

Selling him short. But that's your default view, so I'm happy to leave it there
It's not my default view (well maybe now it is) but he's brought this on himself by firstly spudding it up in 2025 and callously wanting out after we've front-ended his ridiculous contract.

I support the NMFC, not the OneWorld Frequent Flyer Program (I'm a United man personally) sure their Attendants are weathered, but they don't miss a beat.

Spudding it up? Player ratings have him marginally behind Sheezel for 2025. It's about where I'd put him too. I've got no idea why Curtis is so low on that ranking though; maybe they punish disciplinary infractions.

I understand disliking him, but I get the sense there's some interruption happening here of the actual facts.

And at the risk of being inflammatory, he's got more North in him than Duursma ever will
