Good point, there has to be some such explanation.

The other angle on their spinner is they spend 3 years grooming Bashir for this tour and then they don't play him. Jacks looks like he can bat a bit, so play him as a bat and get Bashir in as the spinner. As it is, Bethell looks like he's coming in at 3, never having scored a first class hundred. Has that ever happened anywhere in any era?

26 matches averages 28.

Who would be the Australian equivalent? Connelly? Wylie? Peake?

Gotta admit going into this series I had concerns we would struggle. England's bazball antics really made this a lot easier than it was anticipated to be.
They came in with two legit 150kph quicks, Stokes, a good swing bowler, and a decent young spinner. I thought they might finally bowl well enough here to worry us. And it looked that way in the first innings in Perth.

Those quicks have broken down since they never get a rest, Stokes is like Sisyphus, and the bats are doing absolutely effin nothing.

Massive anticlimax.

Probably doesn't help that the pitches were helping the batting line-ups. Especially ours. The first match looked quite ominous until we switched the batting lineup. We adjusted and England failed to adjust.

I think we underestimated as much as England did how well we play our conditions. Bigger grounds, hot climate and drier pitches. It just doesn’t help the poms. They doubled down on the bazball philosophy and all it did was allow the likes of Head and Carey get bigger totals. Even Uzzie looked a lot better when he came back.

Agreed, except on Bashir. Would not being getting a game at our state level and often plays county 2s, which is equivalent to lower level grade cricket here.

Leach should have been picked.

I read that as syphilis...

Time for Weatherald to earn his dollars. He has been playing on green wickets in Tassie for a while.
Very early seems like he's got a better eye for it than head

Regularly batting on green wickets tends to produce better defensive techniques. Webster is the same, has hit a lot of hard runs on green Tassie wickets.
