Benefit of the doubt HAS to go to the batsman here.
Can anyone look at that third image with a straight face and conclusively say that ball isn't touching grass?
It's not conclusive.
I think it's more likely it was caught on the full than hit the ground.
It doesn't appear as though the ball bounced off the ground into Root's hands, it's more a question of whether there was simultaneous ground and hand contact as the ball first hits Root's hands
