That's some serious gambling money for Carlton & Essendon.

Would like to know how much money gambling funds the AFL as suspect it would be a massive number.

"A detailed examination of all 10 Victorian AFL clubs’ annual reports by this masthead reveals that Carlton made $20.2 million from their gaming and hospitality outlets, Essendon returned $9.7 million, Richmond pulled in $5.6 million and St Kilda’s social club revenue was listed as $1.7 million."

"This masthead’s analysis also revealed that born-again Melbourne Football Club forked out almost $4 million to sever ties with key personnel, including axed coach Simon Goodwin and unwanted player Clayton Oliver, in a year they suffered a $4.45 million financial year loss."

North posted a "profit" but was given $10m more than the wealthy AFL clubs, so effectively lost $10 million. St Kilda made a small loss but again was handed at least $8 million more than the median

Once again showing which Melbourne clubs should be merged/removed from the competition.

Just reminder this is the Non Crows AFL thread if you want to have a discussion on relationship ethics please take it to another board.

Let's get back on track....

The only two I feel confident to say won't be winning again any time soon is West Coast and Richmond.

I'm almost certain that one of the other four (probably not Collingwood) will win it next year.

Celebrate those "no friends" celebrants, like yours truly & baldandbroke ......all the superficial crap

I started to watch that and my eyes rolled back so far in my head that I fell over and needed a friend to help me up

You are right. I like to believe the AFL will get back to basics. But it's probably going to take GC winning a three peat on academy licks to do it.
I'm not sure GC will ever do that, as the reason they exist is to feed picks and players to other clubs

Thats true, but there will be periods within that where they've got more than enough talent to do it.

They'll be close next year.

Exactly, the bottom four on that list should not be in the Elite National Competition - absolute farce they are propped up so much just to keep the VFL clubs intact.

So glad I stopped directly contributing to this shitshow years ago.

Well the AFL is carrying 4 to 6 Melbourne based teams to keep that number rolling in. Its mostly aligned to the broadcast rights but there would be some element that is based on allowing sports betting agencies into the game. Since the AFL was carrying some Melbourne based clubs plus Port? maybe Port I am not sure these days but they certainly still underwrite GC and GWS. So thats probably at least 8 teams in an 18 team league being literally carried because the AFL earn more money, this was probably an underlying problem that saw Tasmanias bid be such an effort to get across the line.

Because there is no extra game they werent going to get any extra broadcast revenue and this also would apply to betting agencies. So the AFL were fearful of losing more money on underwriting yet another team.

I think another smaller part would be the desire by old guard Vics to keep the voting balance in check

maybe but thats becoming less of a thing now anyway. But yeah under the original late 80s and subsequent 90s expansion it was 100% seen as an expanded VFL. Since the VFL was broke at the time this was a way of bringing money back to victorian football.

But in modern times, the voting means very little because AFL house has all the powers anyway.

Look, if all they had on tap was Great Northern, I'd understand him doing that
They had a choice of Asahi, Peroni and Northern. (I was on the Asahi's early doors). Could also get a Jack Daniels, Hendricks Gin or Absolute vodka. A pretty good set up.

They had a fantastic McLaren vale Shiraz too, didn't get name of it apologies. :$
