Knives Out: Wake up Dead Man

I know these aren’t perfect but I just find them so entertaining and enjoyable.

The cast was just incredible. Daniel Craig, Josh O’Connor, Glenn Close, Josh Brolin, Jeremy Renner, Mila Kunis, Andrew Scott, Thomas Haden Church and Jeffrey Wright.

Without doubt though, Josh O’Connor absolutely stole the show.

That’s now three Knives Out movies and I think they’ve nailed all three. Clearly I’m not alone, all three have rated pretty well.

8.5/10
Brolin and renner are first class. I like Mila too. Cabr stand Daniel Craig.

The Invisible Man 2020

8.5/10

Elizabeth Moss was outstanding. I knew Id seen her before from a Max Richter film clip. Deep layers to the movie which weren't invisible.

Great story and ending. Not perfect but worth it.

You knew you'd seen her before?

And it wasn't
The West Wing
Mad Men
The Handmaid's Tale

Question Mark What GIF by MOODMAN

Whiplash

I’d heard amazing things about this but holy ****ing shit.

What a film. That was just unbelievably intense. JK Simmons was ****ing brilliant.

I feel like my heart rate sat above 100 for most of that. Never quite seen a movie like it.

I only remember her from that video clip for the Max Richter Song. I've never seen any of those shows although have wanted to watch Mad Men

Wedlock 1991 Rutger Hauer, Mimi Rogers
6/10

Enjoyed revisiting more than Wedlock. Aside from the two and Tobolowski known for Groundhog Day the rest of the cast was unmemorable. Interesting concept not well executed. Story overall was weak.

Nuremburg (2025)

It tells the story of the Nuremburg trials through the lens of psychiatrist Douglas Kelley, who was asked to evaluate the mental health of the Nazi leaders. Russell is excellent as Hermann Goring, as is Rami Malek as Kelley, and Michael Shannon as prosecutor Robert H. Jackson. The movie is well structured and doesn't drag over its 2 hour 20 run time. The footage from the concentration camps will always be impactful.

It paints its own narrative and glosses over some aspects rather than being an historical account. Was it a show trial for the victors of the war based on retrospective laws? The Soviets were on the prosecution side but were guilty of many atrocities during Stalin's time. Contrary to what is depicted, Kelley concluded that the defendants did not represent a specifically Nazi pathology, but that they were simply creatures of their environment. It didn't show that all the defendants had legal representation. It criticises German expansionism prior to WWII without mentioning British, French and US colonialism.

The writer/director couldn't help himself from slipping in a couple of thinly veiled commentaries on current US politics.

Friendship - Came across Tim Robinson’s humour from The Chair Company and enjoy it. This was written for him and can’t imagine anyone else playing the role. Good fun and with quite a few laughs. He does cringe so well but without making you feel like it’s over the top. Cameo from Connor O’Malley was a ripper as well. Paul Rudd perfect as the neighbour. Is there anything Rudd did want do well? - 7/10

Pavements - A quasi doco about the band Pavement that is also interspersed with their 2022 reunion tour, the making of a jukebox musical of their songs, an exhibition of real and fake Pavement memorabilia, and the making of a fake feature film biopic (presented as real) with Joe Keery in the role of Pavement's lead, Stephen Malkmus. A lot going on, but as someone someone who likes Pavement but didn't grow up with them to know their lore, it kinda blew me away. In tune with the band's self-deprecating, slacker ethos, but also really sweet and earnest in its appreciation. Alex Ross Perry might be a genius? Especially fun to see Keery going method to play Malkmus, he understood the assignment within the assignment. 8.5/10

I assume you’re not in Australia? Or you saw these off the web?

Sirāt comes out here in February and I can’t wait. No word on Afternoons of Solitude, which seems a lot, but given Pacifiction and The Death of Louis XIV, any Serra film is must-watch for me.

DL'ed them, if I was overseas I'd be getting those Marty Supreme takes in asap.

Would see Afternoons again if it got a theatrical release here. Sirat would be fun to watch in a packed house.

Her face is plastered all over all the advertising for Handmaid's tale

I'm surprised you wouldn't link her to it, I've never watched it and I know she's the main character

My weird niche brain thinks of Get Him to the Greek then Peggy Olsen in Mad Men but it’s defs handmaids tale.

She’s a great actress (top of the lake and invisible man are fantastic)

I like to pretend get him to the greek never existed

She had a reasonably big role in girl interrupted before any of that

She's Peggy Olsen to me even though I watched West Wing first

Outside of holiday periods I barely watch tv aside from the shows I plan to watch. Never even heard of it

Airplane 1980

9/10

I never get bored of this. The comedy is on point which I still get into fights about how classic comedy is dead in modern films. It's not just the one element or type of comedy, there's so many different gags, setups and chain up jokes. I get some of it would be considered offensive today but there's just something special about the comedy.

The Kareem Abdul Jabaar scenes and references all link back to his basketball, The scene where he took control of the plane and how serious he took taking control of the plane.

The comedy was never overwhelming, and the movie was never overly serious but the scenes and the gags were fluid throughout the film. The cast was exceptional.
