How old is your son? I've had great success with Sandlot Kids and Little Rascals too - my two are 6 and 8. They're a bit softer than I was as a kid so haven't pushed their boundaries too far yet...really wanna take at least my eldest to the anniversary screening of The Labyrinth next year.
I had great success showing 80s movies to my kids… Star Wars, Back to the Future, Goonies, Princess Bride, Honey I Shrunk the Kids, ET, Willow, Bill & Ted’s, Who Framed Roger Rabbit. As they are getting older, I’ve started introduced Speed, Die Hard, T2, The Matrix, Bourne. Now my son has graduated to Scream. It’s a fun ride.

In that vein, Turner and Hooch today. Both kids loved it, particularly the daughter, who loves dogs. Story is a bit disjointed, doesn’t quite know what it wants to be. But Hanks shows why he became a legend, getting great chemistry out of a dog. He’s the best part of it. 6/10.

Sinners (2025)

Yeah I liked it. Was a bit unsure as vampires/zombies etc aren't really my thing, but I think it was done well in this movie.

Geez it does cross a few genres, you could even call it a musical of sorts, it's not camp like musicals with the cast breaking out in song; but the music is very front and centre in this production. The music, along with the visuals are enough to make this worth watching. 1930s Mississippi and you feel the heat, smell the sweat and the dirt. The shots inside the Juke joint are warm and make you wish you were there.

There's just enough mysticism with all of this too (Religion, Hoodoo), which makes a bridge to the otherwise preposterous vampire stuff. And good old Wallace from The Wire is top notch playing Smoke and Stack. Stay after the credits for a cameo from one of the all time greats as well.

Again, it's a treat for the senses more than an amazing plot, sad I missed out on the 1570 at IMAX, hope it comes around again.

4 stars.

My kids are tricky. If I show too much enthusiasm for a movie, the contrary little treasures will refuse to watch it, e.g. Home Alone.

I watched Star Wars with my eldest and he said "not enough fighting" which was quite deflating.

Try him with Scarface.
I showed The Long Kiss Goodnight to both my kids this Christmas. Thinking it was Bourne, but with a female lead. Forgot about Shane Black’s propensity to throw in at least a handful of inappropriate jokes, like Sam Jackson asking someone if he liked to get ass-fvcked cause he’s going to jail and a rape joke from Geena Davis. Whoops.

He is 3 and 3/4. My partner would love to take our boy to Labyrinth, but from memory that would creep him out. Possibly David Bowie in the codpiece, too. Or maybe not?!

Thanks for the recommendations. It is nice to watch anything that has some soul and isn’t pushing a line of toys! There is something welcomed about hearing boys being sensitive, being wary of things, but having the confidence to voice this. Nice work.

Wedlock 1991 Rutger Hauer, Mimi Rogers
6/10

Enjoyed revisiting more than Wedlock. Aside from the two and Tobolowski known for Groundhog Day the rest of the cast was unmemorable. Interesting concept not well executed. Story overall was weak.
Check out Fortress with Christopher Lambert.

Sentimental Value - Stellan Skarsgård is an accomplished but fading director who is distant from his daughters living in Oslo, but he reenters their lives after the death of his ex-wife and their mother. He has a new project and wants his celebrated actress daughter, Renate Reinsve, to take the role, but after she refuses brings on a Hollywood star, Elle Fanning. The latest movie from The Worst Person in the World director Joachim Trier working once again with Reinsve, this is that film's equal in measure. Skarsgård gives a great performance that seems likely to gain him an Oscar, and it's a really thoughtful exploration of family relations, as well as the compromises in the pursuit of creativity.

The Housemaid - Sydney Sweeney is homeless and desperate for work when she gets hired by Amanda Seyfried to be the live-in housekeeper for the large property she lives in with her husband and 7 year old daughter. This film was honestly pretty stunningly bad, although almost rescued by its sheer campiness and Seyfried embracing these elements to give a great performance that the film doesn't deserve. Sweeney's career is facing some major turbulence right now and this isn't the film or the performance to save things. A real mess of a movie.

That’s very kind of you, thank you

RE: Housemaid. Y'all should check out the Korean 2010 remake instead. Not sure what the 2025 US vrs is but the Korean one is more of darker erotic thriller

I had a look - they're not related, although I'd say the American film is trying to be something of a 90s style erotic thriller. I've not seen the 2010 film and will check it out - I've seen the 1960 original and that's a terrific film.
