People saying they don't care about SOO, it's probably not even really aimed at you. It's a 'Major event' the WA government are putting on for tourism. Funnily enough it's a bit like the WWE event they put on over there.

I doubt they'll get great tv numbers, but it's probably not really why they are having it.

I can’t see myself not tuning in, although, like every other (non-finals) game not involving us, I won’t last if it’s not closish.

Maybe it’s all way fairer than we thought. SA gets gather round. WA gets SOO and way more frequent flyer points. NSW and QLD get opening round and half a dozen first round draft picks each, each year. Tassie gets to bankrupt itself. Vic gets the GF, most of the best free agents, Friday night footy, all the marquee games, and ad hoc freebies when one of their club presidents gets cranky.

"Major event" really?? Would anyone travel to watch a SOO game these days.

Surely the WA government are not thinking any Victorians will come over for the game. They'd be more likely to travel to Perth to watch their own club play one of the WA sides.

I'll barely watch it on TV, if I got a free ticket I might contemplate going to AO to watch a game, to travel interstate - no way.

Too far & expensive to travel.

Would get more if was v SA in Adelaide.

“Most substantial part of your teenage years”. I added pre-draft because it’s logical that once you’re in the system, the qualification period is over.

Ahh ok. Thanks.

It was like that originally because moving states back in the SOO era was not common and if it happened generally it was for a longer duration and you would commonly still be living in your state you want to represent. SOO died by the mid 90s so selection was never really tested on how we see it.

Either way his excuse of seeing himself as a victorian is bullshit. Maybe the fear from many players is there will be a souless allies entity and they dont want to play for it. Which is a good fear because the allies was a stupid idea when it was bought into SOO and it was probably one of the factors that killed it.

All this goes to show is the AFL have royally ****ed it up. Players want to play. Why there are only 2 states playing is purely amateur hour bullshit. Should have always been a carnival and everyone knows it.

Instead of doing the rolling bye crap just have a 3 week midseason break from rd 11 where during that time the players have a SOO carnival. Have SA, Vic and WA in Teir 1 and in Teir 2 have Tasmania, Qld, NSW and NT.

Play two matches each 1 home and one away.

But no, no one is going to be travelling to watch a pre season game where the players arent even match hardened and there is every likely hood that it could be turned into a horrible NBA all star type game

The whole concept smacks of half arsing it, probably trying to kill it before it gets up and going just so the AFL can have an I told you so tour.

3 week mid season break puts the GF back 2 weeks. No way that’s happening.

Typical AFL wanting to make the criteria grey enough so they can manipulate the result to fit their narrative.

Yes, Ashcroft playing for Vic would be a farce, but it’s hard to make an argument against when Pickett can play for WAFL.

If the AFL weren’t going to have proper rules (like where you were born) then just come out and say ‘criteria is based on vibes by AFL discretion’. Thats 90% of the rules and tribunal results from AFL anyway, so just come out and say it.

Honestly they just seem to want it to be fairer.

VIC also get Ashcroft, and WA don't get Pickett? It would be an even bigger thrashing than it will be now.

It makes a mockery of ‘origin’ if they’re not going to apply the rules evenly. The interest is state v state, otherwise it becomes a limited all stars type game with manufactured teams to increase the likelihood of a close contest.

I know X was never going to conquer the world, but year one I watched because it was a form of footy in the offseason featuring players from our list representing our club. That’s enough to have me interested. Then they lost the club interest with the second version and it was never going to stand alone as a sport. Would big bash work if all the teams were out of Canberra and not state affiliated?

Without genuine state v state, SoO has zero hope. And to have that, the teams must be selected based on criteria that applies to everyone, without exception, and logically represents the word ‘origin’. It should be more about where your first few years were played, not your boarding school teenage years.

S.O.O. Player Eligibility Rules according to Carl

Where you live ages 0-18, with weighting for key development years

0-6 years of age - worth 1 point per year
7-12 years of age - worth 2 points per year
13-18 years of age - worth 3 points per year

Feelings = Zero points
No exemptions under any circumstances

Under your system, if you moved states for age 13, you'd accumulate 18 points in the new state and 18 points for the first 12 years of your life - even though clearly you are "from" and largely grew up in the state you were born

Feel it should be reversed. It's about your origins, so early years should carry more weight than later years. However, if you move relatively early in life, where you mostly grew up should count instead. For example if you went to school entirely in a new state despite being born elsewhere, that should probably count as your origin

Getting a scholarship for a couple of years to an interstate football school should not easily reverse your actual place of birth.

Looking across some of the dicey eligibility cases, most of them are actually pretty obvious where they should be eligible to

Will Ashcroft - Queensland (born and lived there until 14)
Levi Ashcroft - Queensland (born and lived there until 12)
[PLAYERCARD]Charlie Cameron[/PLAYERCARD] - Queensland (born and lived there until 16)
[PLAYERCARD]Kysaiah Pickett[/PLAYERCARD] - Western Australia (largely raised in WA until age 13)
[PLAYERCARD]Nick Blakey[/PLAYERCARD] - New South Wales (born in Melbourne, moved to Sydney age 6)

Under the junior club system, the Ashcrofts would be eligible for Victoria, Cameron for WA and Pickett for SA

Eddie Betts would have been eligible for Victoria under current AFL rules even though his origin is clearly SA

Its a ridiculous selection criteria. Should be the state you spend most time in no exceptions. If it comes to 50/50 like you spend 8.5 years in WA and 8.5 years in Vic then let the teenage years decide the outcome. etc.

It really is half arsed and amateurish.

What this smells of the more I look at it is that there is going to be a formed allies team or the very least there are fears of a soulless allies team and players are doing their best to avoid it. I can understand that. The media should be demanding a mid season carnival rather than the bullshit thats going to be dished up.

The AFL can not under any circumstances justify having the single isolated game against just two states. As I have said before they look like they want to kill it and are just looking to do the bare minimum to get an 'i told you so' to the media and fans.

The programming is suspicious, the isolated game is suspicious, the selection criteria barely lacked thought

There is nothing to suggest the AFL is genuinely behind this idea. If the AFL was serious they would have had every state, mens and womens SOO carnival.

Don't agree with everything, but most of his AFL new year's resolutions make sense...

Its behind a paywall so i chatgpt a summary so apologise if something is wrong.

A lot of it ties in together.

The AFL wants blockbuster games for tv. the only way to do it is fixture manipulation. Covid showed us that teams, players etc can cope with a structure of 5 days between games and the league could organise a full home and away season if it wanted to. If fans will travel to see Tuesday and Wednesday night champions league games in Europe, if fans in the USA will go watch Monday night football and midweek baseball games then the AFL can schedule midweek games. Thursday night games were a success.

But here is the important thing I think the AFL has overlooked. If you create more prime time viewing opportunities for perennial struggling supporter clubs they are in turn likely to organically grow their fans and in turn become richer for the experience. North Melbourne is poor because for a decade they were hidden in twilight sunday and saturday spots with minimal tv coverage even in Melbourne while Collingwood got prime time viewing and now the AFL

Draft and salary cap overhaul.

Well the draft needs to go back to basics. Remove everything including academies and the AFL should just simply create stand alone indigenous academies and thats it.

I think the current draft system is fine as a reverse ladder, i dont think we need to change it to a lottery system or anything. I think people are impatient and seem to forget that development needs to occur. The Crows were a laughing stock in 2020 and 2021 but we drafted, traded and developed and have really created a decent squad now. Yes it took 6 years but thats probably the price you pay for a proper rebuild. West Coast and North Melbourne are going through the process. They are probably both around where we were in 2022/2023 going into next year. Richmond will build. People just need to remember, nowhere in the rules does it state a club must play finals every year and if the club doesnt, its the drafts fault.
