Silent night deadly night and Anaconda-both remakes, both 90-100 minutes long, both adequate enough time killers
 lol. I had no idea.
Silent night deadly night, definitely wasn't on my bingo card of remakes. Original was classic trashy horror

The Gift 2015 - Joel Edgerton, Jason Bateman, Rebecca Hall

(0% AI)

10/10

This could perhaps go down as one of my favourite films of all time. Written, directed and acted by Joel Edgerton in an absolute slow burning masterpiece. I remembered Joel from Dark Matter and I'm not surprised how talented this guy is to put something of this calibre together. With only three notable cast members (Apologies if I'm unaware of the other cast) they all produced outstanding performances. Bateman plays such a sharp role in most of his movies, that you're not really sure who he is, or what he's really all about. Rebecca Hall, who I remember from her role in The Prestige and shared some parallels to Mary in the movie Enemy being pregnant, emotionally distant from Simon, and I felt emotionally resonant and drawn to her character as I did in Enemy.

What I loved about the film was it's intriguing opening scene, it roped me in had me invested and then teased me with a slow burning story building the tension with each scene. It didn't take long for Simon's true personality to shine and we kind of get a glimpse of that very early in the piece. He's very dominant and controlling and in one particular scene where he introduces Robyn at the dinner party he practically speaks on her behalf which was quite intentional to the story but really highlighted the sort of person he was. The progression of his behaviour in the slow burning story showed a continual evolution for us that he really was a piece of shit. Personally, it didn't take long for me to start hating the guy well before his full personality was revealed. It was a culmination of many narcissistic and controlling behaviours but also that he barely showed any emotional interest in his wife and certainly no interest in his unborn child. I don't recall any moments prior to her giving birth of him showing any interest and in fact one scene he mentions that he loves 'him' but referencing his colleague.

I really didn't know at any point where this film was headed and even up to the final scenes wasn't sure what we were going to get. The open ended scene leaving Simon with deep emotional turmoil really sold the message about digging your own hole to fall in it of which Simon did well beyond childhood. He's the kind of guy that fails to mature post high school and you can really spot that from early in the film. In the end, Simon lost everything: His wife, his job, and his child whether it was his or not.

I'm still buzzing about this movie.

I'll put this in the right thread this time

Her 2013 Phoenix, Johansson, Amy Adams

10/10

One of the strangest movies in context that Ive ever watched. It was sbsolutely bizarre and Theo....

Its wasnt really about a human being in love with an Ai as much as it was sbout Theo being incapable of dealing with real challenges. His ex wants to challenge him to confront those challenges but he'd rather avoid them.

It gets to the point where even the AI he was falling in love with is presenting him challenges he doesnt want to deal with.

He's obviously a guy who is socially inept.he's literally ****ed up.

Phoenix played his role impeccably, Scarlett was exceptional and I didn't even get to see her. Proof on her talent.

Oversll it was an emotionally complex film I'm still trying to unpack.Philosophical and yet humerous.

Brilliant movie. Great actors.

everything, everywhere, all at once. was late to watch this, too late

i'm down with any movie that explores the inconsequentiality of human existence, or wants to touch on cosmological themes. if they use absurdity to showcase the absurdity of human existence, the better. hard to know if it was intentional, but i enjoyed the kind of upside-down leibniz, the worst possible version of yourself (leibniz - we live in the best of all possible worlds). from that point you know that the take-away will be distilled into 'make the best of it'. movie spoke to my nihilism, and it was good to see a kind of representation of us all having to eat the bagel one day, so to speak.

I couldn't watch anymore than half an hour of that shit.

Horrible movie.

Decided to revisit Looper and Moonfall last night

I guess I had to hit the ground after watching two stelllar movies.

Looper 2012 Joseph Gordon Levitt , Paul Dano, Bruce Willis, Emily Blunt

I'm leaving my rating at 6/10 and that's well below the consensus. In terms of a fun interesting and exciting concept the movie stacks up well and I might be inclined to give it a higher rating but unfortunately holistically, the movie doesn't stack up well. It's a great concept and while not overly original it the story seems lazily written and plot makes little sense overall.

The biggest problem for mine is the supernatural element seems incredibly contrived and hastily added to make the story fit, but none moreso than the addition of the rainmaker which isn't really introduced until the second half of the film. There are a lot of unanswered questions as to the end goal of the rainmaker and the backstory of life in the future. The movie feels sloppy and I felt like every theme in the movie is just a little bit off. It was watchable but I didn't find it overly as entertaining as I thought Imight.

Moonfall 2022 [PLAYERCARD]Patrick Wilson[/PLAYERCARD], Halle Berry

4/10. I'm downgrading this from 6

I thought I'd give this another go because I thought it was an interesting concept but I felt like it was unwatchable no so much more than the performance of Halle Berry of which may or may not be a hot take but don't think she has any realistic acting talent at all. I feel like her performance is absolutely cringe and in all fairness possibly due to the screen writer having a sub par script. She's utterly annoying and frustrating in the opening sequences and then as the movie progresses we're supposed to magically fall in love with her coming of age and 'relatable' personality. To put it simply, she sucked. [PLAYERCARD]Patrick Wilson[/PLAYERCARD] was salvageable but never really great. I've seen him shine in a number of performances, but this wasn't one of them. The remaining cast was unmemorable. The comedy was cringeworthy and didn't really add to the strange and absurd plot that could have made it work.

In the end I found this movie unwatchable, and it might make me consider watching Knowing again knowing (No pun intended) that I gave it a lower rating.

I did not enjoy revisiting Moonfall.

Horrible movie.

I’ve just popped in to Netflix to see where you finished at 30 minutes in- where they are still in the accountant’s office. I too was underwhelmed at this point. But you’ve skipped out just when it starts to get wildly entertaining, for the entirety of the rest of the movie. It’s worth persevering with.

I honestly can't remember. All I recall it was just a bunch of bullshit going left right and centre. I don't think it's my cup of tea.

All day and a night. Good movie. Moonlight is another as well as American Wrestler. Watch those.

This was one of those films that my friends enthused about on release. I often like that maximalist folly, very much found here, the loud ambition of a director and I found this most impressive and super fun when carving its own niche. In the long run, however, I couldn’t play nicely with the circuitous rhythms chosen to over emphasise matters of the heart, within the cumbersome final third of the film.

Haven’t done it myself, but it seems like it must be hard to land a film sometimes.
