Depends on the movie, I’ll chuck a rewatchable (iykyk) on for background noise and to jump into the scenes I love if I’m working, working out, cleaning the house. We also have a lot of kids movies on that are background.

If it’s something new I haven’t seen or really want to dial into devices are generally put away.
Sometimes ill do this for a rewatch, especially if its a slow or inconsequential scene.some scenes are just filler.

Its also much harder to skip boring bits on streaming so if a movie fails to impress me Ill tune out.

The Client started to bore me 2/3 way thrlugh.

I understand people have different lives but that's far too many imo for a normal person with a job. I think a lot of people just watch shit to log it and that defeats the whole purpose tbh but good for them I suppose. I did 145 I think, not sure if I can match that this year but we'll see.

Yeah there's no way for me to watch a movie a night after staring at a screen intently all day

Are you watching movies or have movies on in the background while doing other stuff?
Never. I'm either watching the movie and it has my complete attention, or I'm not watching it at all.

If you do rough math you have about 70 ish hours a week (10 hours per day minimum on average) to do with as you please and that doesn’t account for public holidays or leave you might take. If your passion/hobby is movies 2 a day would leave you with roughly 5 spare hours a day to whatever you like whilst still cranking out 700 films a year if you so wished.

I absolutely did between 5 and 10 movies per week, minimum, from mid way through high school until my late 20s. As I got older I watched less, focused on other things, had kids.

I’d be lucky to watch one a week now but I would have pushed between 350 and 500 movies a year for a solid 10-15 year stretch.

It's the same as people being shocked by how much some people read

If you spend regular time doing something you enjoy you can clock up serious hours over a year

The key is the doing something you enjoy

Of course it sounds like too much if it's something you don't like doing as much

I probably watch one movie and read two books a week. It sounds like a lot to me because I also work full time and have two kids and all their various commitments, but I don’t really watch tv shows so I can make it work.

Other people would prioritise tv shows and still others would consume way more and way less. Whatever works I reckon!

2 books a week would boggle the minds of some

It does! Sometimes when insomnia is kicking my ass it’s more like 5 or 6 a week. Just depends on what’s going on for me but would average to 2 a week.
I'm looking at a book I've been halfway through for months right now

I go through reading phases

Yeah, I'm childless. I live around the corner from my job so am generally out of the house at 8:55am and back at 5:05pm. I'll try to go for a run and/or a swim most mornings or evenings. I live with my partner but we like our alone time. I rarely watch TV. I do read books but generally not for hours at end. I'd be in the 300-500 movies per year range.

Yeah 100% I agree! There’s some weeks where I manage my time well and end up with some free time and get the chance to watch more.

I just think when it comes to letterboxd there’s a bit of a performative ‘look at how many movies I’ve watched’ thing that is what I was talking about. But who cares, if that’s what people wanna do then good for them. I like to let movies sit with me a bit to process what I thought about them. I love when I watch something and two or three days later I still find myself thinking about it

Could be, letterboxed didn’t exist when I started being interested in film and looking up must watch lists and lemme tell you, absolutely no one my age gave one single **** about movies from the 50s, 60s and 70s I was watching in my late teen years so I got absolutely no clout or rizz or whatever the kids call it this year for doing that stuff it was purely for me and I loved it

I don't track what I watch or give scores

Most of what I watch I don't even bother mentioning online at the time

I also don't care if people do

But it does feel competitive at times and I kind of think you're missing the point when it goes that way

Whether it's books or movies or shows or games or whatever

I don’t use Letterboxed or track my watches but I did review films in my uni days, I enjoy reading what people think about films and offering a shortish take on what I’m watching. There’s so much out there that it’s good to gauge general reaction.

F1… about as slick as it gets, an old fashioned blockbuster. The leads generally charm, the action is kinetic, the story hangs together, it works even if you’re not an F1 fan. The commentary explaining the rules gets tiresome, the romance subplot is underdone, it’s a bit trite at times, and it probably runs a little long, losing pace when you should be amped up for the climax. But it’s a fun movie. 7.5/10

Also - Javier Bardem going full out is such a good time. Plus he looks heavenly. What a treat.

Predestination (2014)

Starring Ethan Hawke and Sarah Snook.

Time travel movie. I was told it had the greatest plot twist of any time travel movie, so that is why I checked it out. Holy Crap, if you predicted the twist at the end of that movie, you are a liar. Mind-bending stuff.

I've gotten more into reviewing movies but sometimes it takes the fun away from the movie if you start getting too critical but I've started to take more of an appreciation for the opening scenes and the message they try to float early in the movie. Sometimes this ruins the experience, others it gets you thinking. I've also found appreciation in themes, colours and tones, visuals and audio. Still to this day one of the best movies I've seen in terms of all of that is Escape from New York.

The interesting thing I've found and it's been proven in psychological studies is that we are heavily influenced by the pressures in society. I've often found I'll watch a movie, I'll rate it say a 8/10 and the consensus is that it's a 6/10 movie and then I'm starting to question that I've overrated it. Sometimes if I see an interesting movie I'll just watch it and give it a go than to ignore it because other people said it was shit. That can lead to disappointment but also niche movies that are good for me.

One of the most ****ed up stories I've ever watched, but in a good way.

Incendies strolls in and says "hold my beer".

Accident Man - 2018 - Tubi

Scott Adkins plays a hitman sorry assassin who makes hits looks like accidents. He works for a firm who each have their own specialities

But one day something goes wrong

It has enough humour and absurdity to make it enjoyable. The action and gore is what you expect and while the ending is fairly predictable it still makes it worth the time to get there

At 1h 40 its not over long and having Ray Stevenson in the cast makes it so much better than it ought to be

Quality over quantity when it comes to watching movies, which of course is why acclaimed thespian Dave Franco was my most watched actor of 2025, as I went through the arthouse Now You See Me series.

Highest 2 Lowest - Got to love this being unapologetically a Spike Lee joint. Another director might've tried to be more faithful to Kurosawa, but this one works best when it's nothing like High and Low. Some baffling choices and the first act is kinda rough, but this also has some of the best scenes of 2025. Gotta keep letting Spike cook, have really enjoyed his last three. 7.5/10

Song Sung Blue - A film about a Neil Diamond tribute band was not high on my list of watches, even if starred Hugh Jackman, but a couples night won over and so did the film on me. Hugh plays this character with so much sincerity, a guy trying to entertain people through Neil Diamond songs, that it's hard not be charmed by him and anxious when things don't go to plan. Flirts perilously close to parody, but knows when to pull back. 7.5/10
