As someone who lives in Europe, strikes me as an odd comment. Are the French really perceived as being ridiculous to that degree? Within Europe itself, it’s more like the Italians or the former Soviet bloc countries have the reputation for shoddiness/disorganisation/corruption.

I had a similar reaction - I was crying (with laughter) and hugging everybody as well!

It still angers me that these players who supposedly got given 24 month bans in January 2016 were back playing in 2017. The bans were backdated to March 31 2015 despite all those players training and playing during that time. They should have been banned till at least January 2018 missing 2 entire seasons.

And that Essendon received no punishment for doping 34 players. The AFL made a point that the punishment in 2013 was due to poor governance and NOT doping. Yet when doping was confirmed, they didn't punish it at a club level despite being a club ran program. In other sports team punishments have been given to teams with multiple guilty athletes even if those athletes did it all themselves in secret from the club.

Then when Essendon had many of their players suspended, they got special rules allowing top up players to field a team. Instead of just forfeiting the match.

I don't object as much as others to the draft picks they got for finishing last, as that's the same as any side being injured or having heavy suspension. And had a team penalty for doping been given it wouldn't have been an issue.

The other aspect is that after the Doping story broke, the club should have been cleaned out and the AFL should have appointed independant oversight into operations. Not continue to let Hird and Thompson stick around for years.

I get the point of this thread (bagging the Bombers without zero objectivity) but McGrath was named the AFLPA best first year player in 2017.

He also made the AFL 22under22 four years’ straight, being captain in 2020.

He hasn’t become an elite talent since then but he’s clearly a walk up start in their side - the right choice for them at present.

I plugged "Train your guts out" in to a Hawthorn/Essendon translator and then translated the phrase it gave me back into Hawthorn and it said "Take drugs."
