In fact we went from 4% Asian in 1996 to 10% in 2011, the first census after the end of his term. It’s over 20% now btw (even if Australian politics and media doesn’t reflect it).

He helped destroy what it meant to be Australian and it has nothing to do with how many people with darker skin live here. The destruction of egalitarianism and the concept of a fair go were two key parts of the Australian identity, Howard helped transform our society into the "FU, got mine" we have now. He wasn't solely responsible but he was a large part of leading that transformation through his cynical politicking.

That article makes the whopping assumption that once Howard had shifted focus from guns onto a culture war, it's impossible to shift it back.

I have no doubt about Albanese's determination to tighten gun laws, and no doubt about the majority of Australians strongly supporting such action.

By the standards of recent political discourse it would take a huge leap to suggest Howard's inaction has left the blood of the victims of subsequent climate change disaster related fatalities on his hands. But that would be stupid and totally counter productive.

Morrison definitely made the 19/20 fires worse than they had to be but for me the blame for our inaction on climate change goes back to Howard. If he'd led properly the world would be a different place. Maybe the disasters we've seen this century would have been as bad ... maybe not. But the next 50 years will see worse and it'll be on him, Bush and a few others.

At the time of the Sydney Olympics, if Howard had been vocal about stopping climate change the world would have listened. It was an opportunity we lost and we'll never get it back.

Howard was awful but one of the greatest missed opportunities was in late 80s when UWS made a major breakthrough and while our governments dithered, a foreign phd student broke confidentiality agreements and with help from his government is now a billionaire running one of the largest solar companies in the world. Clear IP theft and cost us billions and billions but our fault and ultimately good for the environment.
