Most overrated player in the AFL currently?

He was leading first ten round last year on most metrics for his position.
Meh.
I've watched a fair bit of him and something is a bit off.

Sure you can cherry pick some weird vague stat if you like. What exactly was he "leading" at "round 10"?
It's a pretty weak flex I'm sorry.

He actually finished 7th in the Giants B and F and the Giants weren't that flash.

7th in an average side. What does that make him?

If he's as good as you seem to think then he's top 3 in the Giants no? Surely top 5?

But 7th is indicative that even his own club agrees with me. He ain't going that well and he's definitely not elite.

I collected stats last year but I don't expect you to appreciate that given you were one of the ones that laughed at what I did. He was on top first 10 rounds. Esava was on top for 4 rounds when he got put back but then got injured.

Not surprised given your defenders were leaking goals all season.

All I can say is thank Christ the club has overlooked him.
You make it sound like Adelaide lost interest in Oliver?
I'm pretty sure Melbourne decided to keep him, which was a massive **** up on our part. He's been garbage for two years.

As others have said he was very good at what he did, but I don't think AFL demands contested beats much these days anyway.

Once again a very weird argument.
The Swans defence is shit..I've been saying that for years. But highly irrelevant to this discussion.

If your metrics had Esava and Taylor doing well then I suggest you check your metrics.

I'll say it again.

Taylor played 20 games and finished 7th in the B and F.
Hes not going that well.

If your metrics don't have Andrews as the number one tall defender than keep changing your metrics until they do.

I also said first 10 or so games of the year, and then he got rounded up which is why saying he's overrated is wild. I think having him in the GWS side really complemented his play because all the other defenders played their role.

We went through this over and over with you and Fadge who I've ignored for being far too argumentative. I collected all stats relevant to defence and tried to block up players by style of defender. As with the forward line, when I selected my AA team it wasn't necessarily rated on total points scored but on the relative metric.

I made some adjustments during finals and even more for this season so that defenders get much more respect. They've got about a 10% adjustment from last year.

From memory he was leading oooc percentage and spoils early but other players did better overall for the whole season. Josh Worrell was absolutely robbed last season.

Again, you used the b&F rankings for the entire season but I was merely mentioning the first 10 games and saying he's not at all overrated.

I mean I could agree with you that he is overrated on the way the media talk about him more than the other very capable defenders. Would that fit?

Where are people with Oscar Allen?

27yo and only one good season.

Where is he really at? I'm not sure.

Not that highly rated I would suggest. Similar to Tom De Koning, he got an offer he couldn't refuse.

WC had a contract on the table, and Hawthorn famously showed interest as Allen met with Sam Mitchell. From what I can gather they baulked at the asking price, as did everyone except the Lions.

Allen got paid, WC got pick 2 and the rest is history. All parties know what they signed up for.

Fair enough and good luck to him.
You just wonder if the Lions might regret it.
Will be an interesting watch..
At least with TDK you can see the impressive athletic profile.

to be fair to the Lions they have a great record at getting oft injured players back up & going
all he really needs to do for them is half contests & average a goal a game

If he was a horse in the mounting yard before last night's game the commentary would be "stayer resuming, looks very burly and you would expect him to improve with more hard racing". Reported thathevhsd hamstring awareness last jight which is a concern.

Yep, Raceday for would have read; Not Today, Passing.

Turning Oscar into CDT was a good bit of business for everyone

Despite all the ranting about the captain wallkng out, all parties knew what was happening very early on and that it was best for everyone

Hes a good player and he'll go well at Brissy

Can't believe they still call it the Kevin Sheedy medal. Made no sense at the time, and is now absolutely laughable.

AFL marketing completely scewed up and overcooked everything they touched, including the terrible name of Greater Western Sydney, and The Giants.

This is what happens when marketing "experts" are put in charge. They need to get rid of these embarrassing names.

Oscar Allen’s best season was on the back of playing against the 3rd best defender each week. Clubs had to contend with Kennedy and Darling first up. Darling in particular playing a selfless team role of running patterns and clearing path for the other 2 for Wet Toast’s version of a 3 headed monster.

His body in recent years is best described by Shakespeare. “The spirit is willing to enjoy good coin, but the flesh is weak.”

Nice one. 'Up in grade, but gets weight relief. Might need a run after 124 day spell. Keep safe'.

Yeah, it's funny how defensive people are of Toby Greene, especially a lot of non-Giants supporters. He's a bit of an enigma, his form of polarisation getting so many footy followers over-reacting to both his unlikeability and likeability for some reason, especially blokes.

I actually really like the bloke as a player, he has some real tricks, gives a game some life, and seems to be loved by his teammates. He also plays for a relatively inoffensive club who I often find myself shouting for in a match when I'm watching as an otherwise impartial. So yeah, I'm often on his side. Not as much as Dwayne "Toby would've got six weeks for that" Russell mind you, but don't mind seeing him and his team do well.

But I've seen too many finals now where he's failed to fire when really needed (including getting suspended for September in 2021) and flop on the big stage. Barring the two big finals against Richmond, where he failed to show up for either to our advantage, I've found him a disappointment more often than not.

I'm not counting an exhibition game in mid-February as the big stage either.
Bingo!

The torrent of ejaculant zipping around commentary boxes when Toby plays is incredible. The repression , and enthusiasm, is impressive.

I do like his bush ranger personality, his dislike of authority, it's entertaining, and I could imagine enjoying his company at a bogan bash. And the referees' blatant unfair treatment of him is pathetic.

But really, he can be a complete nincompoop, and a liability, for his team, and he is prone to the fairly frequent unforced error. I enjoy watching him, but have little confidence in how he will perform quarter to quarter. He's a solid sub elite footy player, with a temper and a drawl.

If he were a car he'd be a Kingswood, a wine, in a cask.

Pretty sure that the Giants made the call to name it the Kevin Sheedy award. Recognition of his input at the outset. If it becomes outdated you know that they can just change it accordingly. Carlton's B &F was previously known as the Robert Reynolds award and was rather sensibly updated to the John Nichols award.

Its nice that they named it after an embezzler

Long time believer in Draper in this thread.

But I'd say Adam Saad is a strong candidate for most overrated.
