Review R1: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly vs. Collingwood

If we are brave at selection, we would bring in Rankine for Laird & put a more creative player to half back

Keays game was underrated. 3 goals assists and got his first goal against the Pies ever!

ANB looked like the player from early last season when he was flying.

A competent ruckman completely changes our midfield. Not a perfect game but he will get fitter and more confident.

Berry was surprisingly good. Burst from clearance and mostly clean.

Tex was marking everything but his kicking early was ordinary. He lifted in the second half and had some clutch moments.

Cook impressed. Little clever toe pokes and body work was really good. We all know he is a classy kick.

Bond and Toby Murray didnt do themselves any favours. Toby obviously fills an important role and will get better. Bond was a turnover merchant. We complain about Laird but I saw at least 3 kicks that missed there targets and they were 15 metre chips.

Apart from that, it was all played well.

Don’t understand the berry criticism. 8 score involvements. Hard at it. Wasn’t perfect. But still very good
He improved as the game went on.

Key thing for me is Milera.

Finally living up to the potential injuries could have robbed him of.

Agility, desire to break lines and big boy strength. Perfect HB.
It's the hair. Keays has transferred the power of the 'do to Milera.

It was obviously a directive to put the brakes on in the first half. It was also a directive to go balls out to start the 3rd and attempt to win the game quickly. Great coaching.
IF ... and it's a big IF ... that's what happened, I'll be very happily surprised.

Is it possible that Nicks and Murray have worked out ways to get the Crows to pace and control a game (speed up, defend/slow down/speed up again/absorb etc)?
Bloody great, if yes.

I actually thought that ROB wasn't that bad and rucks aren't important, AND McAndrew would be pretty average.

I was wrong on both counts. I cannot remember the last time I've watched the crows and a ruck is jumping and clearly tapping the ball to advantage like McAndrew in the 3rd quarter. That 10 minute patch was Sandilands like.

Good:
Milera - great composure, took the game on
Cook - hope he has found his spot and continues to grow
McAndrew - bloody good debut, ran the game out well - he's got quick hands for a big fella
ANB, Tex, Worrell, Rachele, RT all solid
Umps - strangely got a good run from them for a change
Banking a win early with a few out and a few more underdone.

Bad:
Laird - as usual, we would be better side without him.
Gameplan - slow, hugging the boundary line when they have a short defense.

Ugly:
Nicks - Just zero confidence in him.

I think it's quite clear that it was a directive. We put speed on the ball to start the 3rd, Collingwood weren't expecting it - because we haven't taken risks against them for the better part of a decade.

Really liked Thilthorpe in the middle. Draws bodies to him and clears space for everyone else
Liked how he took N Daicos & won the clearance.

The first half was frustrating but given we hadn’t had a proper game and Collingwood had, we’re on their patch with their freaks in full voice, the first half rust was understandable.
