Review R1: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly vs. Collingwood

I think they changed the rules to allow ruckman to cross over the line, they just cant block each other. Grundy exposed the flaw but the flaw was obvious because an umpire is never going to be perfect in throwing the ball on a 90 degree angle
In the Geelong v Freo game, and in the Hawks v Bombers game there were several incidents where they still paid the block for crossing the centre line in the ruck contest. Exactly what Cameron was doing in the last. And tonight they let every single one of them go.

Good
Cook - great game, as Kane McGoodwin said, great 1 on 1 wins, should play every game. You feel confident in him as a spectator, I imagine team mates feel the same
McAndrew
Worrell
Milera
ANB
TT
Rachele
Dawson

Bad
A few players were pretty scratchy - Peatling, Keays, Soligo, Max, Bond
Chippy wide timid gameplan

Ugly
Laird - should go back the 2s, but we all know he won’t
Poor ol Kingy, having to be the voice of the disgruntled Pies fans, banging on about the obvious, textbook 50m penalty

that could be instruction changes based on the previous games. So if one group of umpires are struggling with it, they will adapt instructions mid round. i personally dont have a problem with it unless they are inconsistent and pay against one ruckman while the other gets a ride.

Berry’s game severely underrated by a few in here. 19 touches, 4 centre clearances (most on ground and all were clean breaks), 8 score involvements and 515m gained. Easily his best game at AFL level and great to see him bounce back after finals last year.

Good
McAndrew’s - great debut, changed the dimension of our midfield, our mids can be more proactive

Cook, showed some composure and classy signs

Soligo, AH Chee, Peatling and Cumming all got a hitout under their belt

Milera - starting to fly

Our defence - so under-rated

Ugly
Collingwood’s game plan - play slow and drag the other team down to our game pace because we have half the team over 30yrs old

Good:
Brayden Cook - I could mount an argument that he has the best skills in the team (bar maybe Milera). Made some great decisions, his goal was huge, and went in hard a number of times. HUGE performance. Locked into the side, and we are better for it.

Milera - best on ground for mine. Definition of the word “clinical”.

McAndrew - laughable to even imagine O’Brien replacing him at any point, ever. Was very good. Loved his tapwork. Loved a few of the second efforts. The dropped mark up forward was a shame but a hugely positive performance.

Worrell - such a quality player and should really threaten for AA selection.

Neal-Bullen - was running around like a madman and had some important moments. Tidy up the kicking and it’s 3 vote territory.

Dawson - typical game from the captain. Some very important moments without anything flashy.

Bad:
Toby Murray - not at the level. 32% game time suggests that Nicks has zero confidence in him. Not sure he can be retained.

Fogarty - was terrible. Starting to fall into “liability in big games” territory. Late goal important, which vaulted him up from the ugly category.

Keays - had some really poor moments. Somehow ended up being involved in some good stuff by the end to his credit but overall, had a shocker.

Ugly:
Rory Laird. I wonder if this guy pays any attention in team meetings? Certainly doesn’t play within the gameplan, so either different rules apply to King Rory, or he’s just a moron. An absolutely pathetic, selfish performance with horrendous decision making and skill level thrown in. Actually thought his 2025 season ended up being pretty good overall. That today was complete vomit.

Billy Frampton - was in our best dozen.

Thought Peatling had some clutch moments in the 4th when needed

Keays game was underrated. 3 goals assists and got his first goal against the Pies ever!

ANB looked like the player from early last season when he was flying.

A competent ruckman completely changes our midfield. Not a perfect game but he will get fitter and more confident.

Berry was surprisingly good. Burst from clearance and mostly clean.

Tex was marking everything but his kicking early was ordinary. He lifted in the second half and had some clutch moments.

Cook impressed. Little clever toe pokes and body work was really good. We all know he is a classy kick.

Bond and Toby Murray didnt do themselves any favours. Toby obviously fills an important role and will get better. Bond was a turnover merchant. We complain about Laird but I saw at least 3 kicks that missed there targets and they were 15 metre chips.

Apart from that, it was all played well.
Bond was at least trying to take the game on. Laird just bombers it to Collingwoods advantage all night trying to kick defensively…

Watch Collingwood play all last year - they force teams to play slow and wide

It’s not our game plan it’s their style dragging teams down

I feel like some people here have been vastly overstating the capabilities of Toby Murray.

He's had 1 game, I'm not making any judgements yet.at points in the last few years people wanted Milera delisted.

I get the feeling the umpires forgot about the rule to be honest. If the AFL want players to jump at the footy at centre bounce they need to enforce it and be strict about it. Otherwise McAndrew will be target number 1 for opposition rucks doing anything they can to hinder his jump. Especially now he has had big CB impact in a game.

Kingy still going on about the 50s. Even now!! Flog.
The funny thing is that it was basically irrelevant. All the 5 Collingwood players ran off towards our goals, leaving an open paddock in front of Tex, who could just about have run 50m (bouncing the ball) and achieved the same result.
