Autopsy Round 2, 2026: Hawks pluck Swans

If Calsher finds that form again absolutely Lewis would get dropped. You simply don’t need 4 talls, what you lose defensively and at ground level far outweighs and small benefit of trying to stretch the opposition
issue with playing 4 talls is also who the hell do we drop? Obviously it'd have to be one of the rucks, but you'd be reluctant to do that when it's clearly working. Other than that, you'd have to consider losing someone like Butler or D'Ambrosio – who are also vital for our structure. People may say it's a good problem to have, but for me it sucks not having your best players on the field. And if McCabe keeps it up, it's only going to further complicate things

FWIW - We have only played three games.

And quite frankly, Lewis isn’t playing close enough to goal for goal output to be a critical measure.

He’s getting most of his footy between the arcs as the higher link CHF type is his role.

He can’t be expected to kick bags when Chol and Gunston are obviously our deeper goal kicking options.
No one is asking for bags of goals, but his impact at the ground has been minimal outside of the end of last nights game.

I also used all games played over the last 3 seasons, wasn’t basing it all off this year

So his what 4 in 24
and 8 last year?

Sensational base to work off

Just watched the replay. As everyone knows, you miss a bit when you're at the ground. Lewis had a great game, overall, not just the last quarter. Made some dumb mistakes, but so did half the other players on the field. Did an absolute power of work up the field, was a good target, made a good contest, brought the ball to ground, exactly what his role is.

Then I checked his stats, and they fully back up the above: 17 disposals, 9 marks. That's a bloody good night for a high key forward.

For about the 578th time in the last 20-odd years, I'm glad our coach is the coach and not Bigfooty keyboard experts....

Adam Simpson was all over it.

That highlights the difference between a proper analyst like Simmo and a mug like King.

Simmo nailed it by saying that the Swans needed to find other avenues to goal once their handball run game through the centre square had been stopped. King continued to insist that the Swans had to go back to their handball game if they were to win.

One has actually coached a team to a flag. The other probably isn't good enough to coach an under-12 team.

I notice a sentiment outside of my Hawks bubble is that we don’t have the elite high-end talent of other teams.

Ridiculous.

You could argue that right now, we have the leagues best general forward (Gunston), best small forward (Watson), best tall defender (Barrass) and the best small defender (Hardwick).

We don’t have the depth of elite talent in the midfield other teams have, certainly not on the wing, but we are absolutely star studded.

As we saw last night, our elite talents are game winners.

Newcombe wasn't a high draft pick so doesn't get the hype
Day has had so many injuries he doesn't exist

Those two players are both elite.

Then all the players you mentioned.

"Reeves with the reach around" I mean I enjoyed Nukes goal as well but

3 Votes to Sam Mitchell in the coaches box.

Playing Weddle as a defensive winger/spare 7th defender and pushing Ginnivan/Moore to replace his width on a wing got the game back on our terms. Will be interesting to see if we structure similarly on Easter Monday. Our back six looks very vulnerable when opposition can move the ball, but when we are able to slow them down and go down the line they look like the best back six in the comp.

Weddle is a cheat code. I don't think there's anyone in the comp who can play a sacrificial defensive role while having the athletic power to be so damaging offensively.

He covers the ground of two players.

The Hawthorn 3 peat team was treated the same because we lacked the power goal kicking mid like Ablett or Dangerfield. There's class on every line.

If we get our kicking boots back on we'll absolutely brain sides.

Butler was clutch with his set shot from 50. Someone had to stop the rot.

We have a 70% win rate when Wiz has 15+ touches in a game.

He's second only to Gunston in footy IQ. The bloke cops the most oppo heat in our side and he continually finds the only pocket of space.

He's taken his game to another level as he's built his fitness.

This A grade talk is just utter garbage.
Gunston
Sicily
Newcombe
Day
Barras
To name the obvious ones. We also arguably have the most bunch of B+ talent that's either building to A grade level or play at B+ consistently every game.

Jesus Christ no one is saying to drop him for life and never consider him again.

Simply suggesting that his spot in the team is far from safe on exposed form is laughable is just stupid, he is clearly struggling for form. He can turn it around, but if it isn’t soon he absolutely should be having his spot under pressure

Hopefully the gaps between Mitch's best and worst become smaller as he gets more games under his belt. If he can get through unscathed to our mid season bye and be a consistent contributor, I think he'll be brim full of confidence in his body to attack the pointy end of the season and be a really key figure.

What the hell has Kayo done to their replays!

They've edited down the game! They chop out big chunks, like a minute of game time here and there.

That is utter bullshit. Put the price up and reduce the product.
The full replays are still there.

He might have been wrong - but bloody hell the media training Jacinta has gotten him has paid dividends. The way he talks compared to when he was playing with us is night and day.
Are you seriously telling me that you didn’t notice the amount of edits in that clip alone? 😂

Are you genuinely suggesting that Channel 7 digitally added in a thrown drink bottle during a live broadcast??
No, more questioning if someone on the SM clip had done it.
I have since seen the broadcast footage and am satisfied that the incident occurred by feral swans

I would not term that exactly as a mistake, he was expecting Impey to be steaming ahead and so handballed it fwd. For some reason Impey was lot slower and still not on his bike. Impey would likely have still been caught if handball was perfect as he didn't have speed still.
Impey ran sideways instead of forward
