Autopsy Round 2, 2026: Hawks pluck Swans

He kicked 8 goals from 8 games last year

He kicked 5 goals from 4 games the year before.

He has only kicked more than 2 goals 1 time in his last 15 games and more than 1 goal 3 times in his last 15 games.

He had a very good last quarter, but questioning his spot in the team wasn’t at all laughable
I'm Mitch Lewis supporter #1 but he's not a lock. Just knowing Dear is in the wings, and given McCabe's performance in the twos, he needs to perform.

Sam will give people the opportunity to find form but a poor showing would have had his spot very shaky.

Come on man, you really going to ignore his injury history in those stats? You really going to ignore the role he's been playing the last 3 games.

Yes, the bloody were laughable.
No but it’s irrelevant? I am well aware of his injuries, but if you aren’t ready to perform at AFL level you can work up to it at VFL level

We also have options we can run the 3 talls, or we can change it up and play 2 plus a resting ruckmen, or just go smaller and go two talls. Plus as you mentioned Dear and McCabe

Given Gunston, Chol, Lewis, Calsher all play fundamentally different roles, I liked when we played the four talls last year. So reckon we can find a way to squeeze them all in. All while McCabe's knocking on the door...

You can’t fit in all 4, especially with 2 rucks as well. Also while they might not be identical players they do have a lot of overlap.

I feel like that might be Mitch's role in 2026. Just work his ass off up and down the ground and provide a contest up forward and on the wing. He's got a huge tank for a guy his size.

I'll take a 17 disposals, 9 mark and one goal game every day of the week, especially when we have gunners and Chol as stay at home forwards.
His role is definitely more as the roaming chf, but he will also kick bags and be a big goal kicker while doing it. You see him work his ass off all the time, almost grinds his oppo into the ground. He has good positioning, just not clicking yet. Once it does watch out.

Absolutely, but 20 classy Mackenzie touches and 27 workmanlike Ward touches every week to accompany Jai will be MASSIVE if it becomes the norm.
Thing is that’s the baseline or will be there abouts.

Mackenzie has such a nice step and moves really well, uses it well and has built his inside game more. There’s a lot of improvement left in he and Ward.

Wards step now has been to win more footy, because he’s a gun when he’s got it in his hands. Superb by hand and foot, plays inside and outside strong, speed and elite endurance. He keeps getting better, my big call was that I think he’ll be a genuine A Grader of the comp this season.

There’s a lot of talent going through the middle, it’s just a matter of it all working, gelling and building.

If Calsher returns to the kind o form that we know he's capable of, we have to play him. And we're not dropping Lewis, Chol or Gunston.
If Calsher finds that form again absolutely Lewis would get dropped. You simply don’t need 4 talls, what you lose defensively and at ground level far outweighs and small benefit of trying to stretch the opposition

All of us want Calsher to return to the team and to be a great player. But.... Lewis had 17 disposals and 9 marks yesterday in what was for him a just solid performance; by comparison, Calsher's best ever returns across those metrics are only 12 and 5. His averages are 7 disposals and 2.5 marks respectively. Lewis' best stats are 24 disposals, 11 marks and 6 goals. Calsher's biggest bag is 3. So right now, Lewis' best is twice that of Calsher, albeit Calsher might be ahead at the same stage of their careers (I haven't checked). Calsher is a kid. His ceiling may be higher than Lewis'. But he has to actually go past Lewis to get picked in front of him. He may do that but on these numbers he hasn't yet. There's no rush until either Lewis plays really poorly or Calsh lights it up at BXH.

Gotta love some online comments about players. Comments section conversation about Chol being inaccurate - he kicked 42.18 last year. I reckon there would be a few key forwards out there who would kill for 70% accuracy.

Can’t believe that Coke throwing Swan supporter wasting the Sydney COLA

Just had a quick peruse of the stats, and that's a very pleasingly even team effort. Newk led the way, but absolutely no passengers.

If the kids keep playing like they did today, we're going to have trouble fitting everyone in, but there will be injuries, there will be opportunities.

Tom McCartin fined for staging, Chol free to play
woo hoo!!!
there is a God after all.

Lewis might be in trouble with the coaches for showing up in the last quarter and not persisting with the decoy role we have kept hearing about. Those few hard attacks on the ball in the last quarter were great and should be the minimum we see every week. It will almost be 3 weeks before we can see the next glimpses. Hope it’s more of the same high intencity.
That made be chuckle - thanks!

You can't say things like that, they'll be coming for you now 😂

Calsher has massive potential but he's not there yet. Still young, but the tank isn't there for full AFL games yet. If we're to continue with the two rucks, and we should as its working really well, then another big is not what comes into the team outside of injury

The Mitch Lewis carry on is ridiculous.

His last qtr was superb and if he kicked the play on goal in the 3rd everyone would be praising him - ok he missed it - so what - and he made maybe one other mistake.

He isn’t getting dropped and won’t be if he keeps that form regardless of a couple of mistakes.

He was a huge reason why we won and why we belted them in the last qtr.

FWIW - We have only played three games.

And quite frankly, Lewis isn’t playing close enough to goal for goal output to be a critical measure.

He’s getting most of his footy between the arcs as the higher link CHF type is his role.

He can’t be expected to kick bags when Chol and Gunston are obviously our deeper goal kicking options.

So much criticism for Lewis - but compare him to the million dollar key forward at the other end of the field that cost a best 22 player and two first rounders.

Or Amartey (hahaha)

Lewis is playing third banana to Gunston and Chol, but just worked his arse off all day, even though it wasn't working for him. It finally paid off in the last quarter and Im super pumped for him.
