There must be allowances to the first-round presence rule though given what we saw with the Charlie Curnow trade. Sydney traded out their first round selections in 2025 + 2026 (F1) + 2027 (FF1) which would rule out the ability to take 2 picks in a 4-year window. Or maybe the window was extended when they allowed trading picks a further year ahead.2. First-round presence rule
To stop clubs giving away too many top picks:
- Every club must use at least two first-round selections within a rolling multi-year window (historically four years; extended as future trading expanded).
- If a club would fall below this requirement, they cannot trade away another future first-round pick until the rule is satisfied.
Purpose: prevent clubs from permanently trading away early talent and damaging competitive balance.
