Watching Kossie Pickett rip the game apart in the second half today showed me that it's the players with the "spark" that make the difference these days.

Gone are the days of big lumbering inside mids (Cripps, Wines, etc) winning Brownlows / being the best players in the league.

Players that can take the game on with speed and dare and kick goals like Kossie and The Wizard are the real stars. Combo mid / forwards who can change a game in the middle or up forward like Heeney.

Who knows the game might move back towards a heavily contested style in the future but right now you need speed and electric skills to break a game apart.

Credit to Melbourne they could see where the game was evolving and knew they had to keep Kossie as he is absolutely tailor made for today's AFL.
To be fair, Cyril was doing this for us in bursts 15 years ago.

Kosi is a gun, but you still need your grunt mids. The game may be moving past Wines and Cripps but Rowell just won a Brownlow.

So Essendon are fine because they've got Kako? 🤣

I honestly feel sorry for Kako, he's probably going to have a decent career.

Just unlucky he was drafted to that shambolic institution and a fan base that puts way too much pressure on their kids (as they have nothing else to hang onto).

True but Rowell is a dynamic inside mid, he can really get moving when he gets those legs of his powering away.

So I would say you still need your grunt inside mids but they need to be inside / out players like Newk is to be truely elite.

Even Libba has a bit of toe about him on occasion.

Yep and Rowells an absolute workhorse, ultra consistent, you can depend upon him to get 10 tackles, 25 contested possessions, and about 1.5 goals a game.

Not a good time to be struggling as a coach with the likes of Longmire and Hinkley available.

Personally I reckon Longmire would be good for the Blues.

I know it's often fraught with danger bringing in a "super coach" to fix a struggling team but he's still relatively young and he is actually a good coach.

Alot of the Carlton supporters don't wanna go with an old coach, they wanna go with a new young coach with fresh ideas.

That might be a good way to go TBH.

Going the recycled coach path with Voss didn't work that well (of course Voss not in the same league as Longmire, Hinkley, Simpson ,etc).

100 percent it is. Trouble for blues is even if they get a young innovative coach with fresh ideas, the Carlton board might restrict this new coach and tell them what to do. Supporters of Carlton are afraid this is already happening to Graham Wright.
