Top End Series v Bangladesh and beyond

Id like to see the WACA pinch one of those August fixtures. Cricket in August can work in Western Australia. Looking at the fixtures, 14 venues are being used in the upcoming home fixtures.
Perth is still consumed by footy in August, particularly if Freo are heading for finals and/or Eagles fans are thinking about the number one pick again. It'd be lost.

Its a wed start and we will be lucky to get 15k for the entire match

Rather 5k on day one at the WACA than 5k in an empty 60k plus Optus

and going forward yes have the bigger nations england/india at Optus.....but seriously we should consider the smaller pulling nations at the WACA.....its redeveloped and is a great cricket wicket
Agree that a Wednesday start is a nonsense, but it won't be fixed by being at the WACA. That ground has played its last men's international.

australia cricket contracts renewed in the last 24 hours and a hint to who may be playing the bangladesh series:

batsmen:
Weatherald
Head
Labuschagne
Smith
Green
Webster
Marsh

wicketkeepers:
Carey
Inglis

spinners:
Lyon
Murphy
Kuhnemann
Zampa

quicks:
Cummins
Starc
Hazlewood
Boland
Neser
Doggett
Bartlett
Ellis

That is a hell of a schedule for an old side.
I'd be resting them for Bangladesh. And possibly the dead rubber NZ tests
Yeh play a virtual A side.

Weatherald
Hunt
Patterson
McSweeney (c)
Sangha
Scott
Philippe/Inglis
Bartlett
O'Neill
McAndrew
Roccochioli
Thornton (12th)

Charlie Anderson (bolter)

It is not a charity, these are still proper test matches

Against a side who, while still capable of breathtaking mediocrity, have knocked off Pakistan 2-0 in Pakistan relatively recently, took a test at Sabina Park as well. Not huge scalps but shows an improved aptitude away from home, having finally broken through with that win in NZ going back a little while. They’re not completely hopeless.

I'd be looking at
Renshaw
Wetherold
Kellaway
Patterson
Harper
Webster
Philippe
Elliot
ONeil
Murphy
Bell

send these guys on an 'A' tour if we must - we don't hand out soft test caps.

no need to rest our test stars, they have the opportunity to rest now and also sit out next years IPL as well.

in any case, the Bangladesh tests would be a good warm up for the South Africa series.

I don't see what they see in Weatherald, he isn't the answer, Renshaw is a better player and 2 years younger.

TP Ward (TAS)2024-20257 mt13 inn0 n/o665 runs142 t/s@51.15
Wards first season @3.
Everyone struggled in the top order on last seasons bowler friendly decks with no one moving out of the mid 30s among the top 10 bats, inc Ward. I admit he has had a problem converting over his career, but he brings vital experience, a good temperament to the table. And unlike Weatherald has a solid technique. He has also played a lot of successful A cricket and is still only 28...

thankfully an 'A' tour to india has been organised and some of our fringe players get selected, as they may be required in the new year.

Hypothetically if our aging stars get through this hectic 12 months (and we know all of the won't), their records could look something like this:

Approximately another 1500 runs, 80 wickets, 80 dismissals (wk) on offer:

Smith 140+ tests, 12,000 runs and 1500 runs within Ponting
Carey 70 tests, 280 dismissals and only behind Marsh, Healy, Gilchrist

Lyon 160+ tests, 650 wickets and 60 wickets away from Warne and within 10 tests of most tests played by an Aussie.

Starc 125 tests, 520 wickets and within 50 wickets of McGrath
Hazlewood 95 tests, 375 wickets
Cummins 90+ tests, 400 wickets (only one in this list that will still be under 35)

*Boland and Neser may only get limited opportunities through injury and depending on our bowling attack for the India tour.
