Autopsy Round 5 = Collingwood 39-45 Fremantle

We should have bitten the bullet and called time on 3 out of Howe, Membrey, Sidebottom and Pendlebury.

Poor list management again.
Unfortunately, it’s human nature to fear getting rid of a player that might keep playing good footy.
That’s why it takes some courage to do it.

This board is truly insufferable after a loss.

Whilst the result was agonising it was through our own errors in the end. The effort was back and the execution missing.

If we’d kicked one of those shots early in the last we probably win and posters here would be happy. It goes a goal the other way and we are useless.

That just doesn’t make sense.

Agreed.

A better kick at goal, or a better decision coming out of defence, and we win the game.
Sometimes it is a game of inches, and indeed it was tonight.

Fortunately we have Carlton and Essendon in the next fortnight, we should win those games comfortably.

We deserved to win that game of football, we were so good for so much of that game.

We played one of the best teams in the comp so far this year, that no-one realistically expected us to win.

We kept them to ten scoring shots in 120 mins of footy, that’s almost unheard of!

They were on top for maybe 8-10 mins of the 120.

We just badly stuffed up our forward entries and kicking for goal.

But the tackling and intensity and endeavour was off the charts.

I was really proud of their efforts and am devo like everyone else here because we were much the better team for the vast majority of the night and it’s a travesty not to come away with the win.
Thank you Swoop. I thought I must have watched a different game to most people here.

You just can't be nursing Pendlebury to the games record, WITH Sidebottom, Howe and Elliot in the same side.

Poor list management.
You promised us you were giving the year a miss but now you keep posting and making things worse for the rest of us.

You say that attacking teams will beat us comfortably. The point of fact is that they can't because we do have brilliant team defence usually (last game was an exception, but note that the positive addition of Anderson today to our midfield was a massive boost for team defence).

Our strenght is defensive system, and while we are working out the forward line we have to play to our strength, and gauge the potential of our young players going forward.

I agree with your early points. However, its too soon to say that the Brisbane game was an exception. The Brisbane game is the one you can point to and say, this will happen again.

Can’t believe people are potting IQ. He’s been incredibly consistent the last two years and is clutch like Maynard in preventing scoring opportunities for the opposition that by rights looked certain. How he is the one copping criticism mystifies me.
Everyone is getting potted tonight.

Steene isn't competitive around stoppage after the hitout yet. Both Darcy and Jackson are big clearance winners and in that sort of game hit outs to clean breaks weren't going to happen, so the hitout wasn't important.

We have been slaughtered at centre clearances the last 2 weeks with scores against, at important times ( start of qtrs ) we have to nullify that, Steene can jump over most opposition rucks, let’s utilise that
The excitement he creates when he does do it, it generates enthusiasm amongst the players. Another bonus

There’s no realistically viable alternative to Howe’s position, Sidebottom’s form warrants his inclusion and Elliott is our deepest forward and playing at capacity our clear best forward. Obviously his form is average but you give someone with his talent an extended opportunity before discarding him.

It’s the aging dispensable guys and roles that need to be moved on at first opportunity. McStay, Membrey, Crisp, Lipinski. Crisp’s form clearly warrants his inclusion in the first team though.

I dont want to hear we need to get to work
We are winners etc

Time for adam kingsley home truths style
Agree. Out with this love and care stuff and drill some fear of god into the players to up their game.

Then why come on here after a Loss as you know what going to Happen

Just like Rubbing it in about it?

Tried hard but oh so ordinary is what we are. Give up any hope of attracting top line talent to our club while playing the slowest most boring brand of footy in the comp. It's bad enough playing that way and getting over the line. Grinding away for four quarters and losing a very winnable game just adds salt to the wound.

Impossible to fault the effort and pressure of the boys tonight but gee we have deteriorated into a very blue-collar side, with very little skill or X-factor.

So few of our players are remotely close to career-best form. It takes us so much work to score. Nothing is easy or free-flowing.

On the coaching/tactics front, I have long been baffled by why our F50 is always so crowded and stagnant, whilst our opponent’s is usually so open.

Hats off to Billy Frampton. He is now our second most important and dependable player. Who would have imagined that? And great debut from Anderson. He’s a keeper!

Checkers’ body can only hold up for half a season now. It was the right call. We need to make a few more calls like that.
At least he is kicking goals

Someone needs to tell Fly that we are not winning the GF this season so it’s time to play the kids. West, Ryan, Swadling, TJ, Buller, Saxena. Let’s see them play not one game here and there.
Fly inherited a premiership list and his coaching was perfect for that list. That’s over let’s see if he can develop a young team without giving away our high draft picks for second hand average players.
It's ironic given that when he was recruited, his development and work with younger players was talked about as one of the big reasons. We have over achieved, I believe in the past 4 years. Fly is a brilliant tactical coach no doubt and Nick a generational player, they can cover some pretty big deficiencies. But we're in a serious need of some young players stepping up. We have more of our youngish draft picks playing for other teams than our own at the moment (maybe equal with Steene coming in).

This.

Is it a matter that we just don't have the talent to replace these players, or are we just not giving them a chance. I don't watch VFL closely so I don't really know.

May as well fold the club

I am really frustrated with a lot of things.

But one thing that I can't explain is Steene playing 51% TOG. What the **** is that coaching? We did it with Cox last year, but with an extended bench and (one would imagine) a kid with a better tank than Cox, I just find it inexplicable. What is the actual point of including him if he plays 10 minutes a quarter? It feels like our coaching is trying to be too clever or cutesy maybe. Why is he ahead of Buller if we don't trust him to play?

An easily winnable game we pissed away. Oh well

We are tanking. Brilliant strategy from fly and the boys to get pick 4 and then piss it away on another club's leftovers

Is our defensive system good in a holistic game sense, or is it good because we are so dour and is ultimately part of the reason we can't score?
No, our defensive system is good because it is highly trained and integrated across the mids as well (when they put in the effort and know what they are doing).

The addition of Anderson has been enlightening. He added exactly the kind of ingredient we needed into the midfield. Fremantle has one of the best midfields in the AFL, so this was not insignificant.

The midfield and the defence understand how to integrate and connect.

The issue obviously is with the midfield and the forward line.

In my view, this is clearly a personnel issue. We don't have Bobby, and it looks to me more and more like Checkers and Jamie had a synchronisation that no one knew about until it went missing.

So, if it is a personnel issue, this means we need to bring in West and Buller asap. They are the future. They need to play, in the knowledge that we have a fantastic defensive system to scaffold them in staking their claim to an AFL career with the Pies.

Made some incredibly bad turnovers tho
Can recall one bad one in the third quarter. But Freo had 100 players back at that stage. For all us key board warriors try kicking the ball to a non existent forward line. No one outside of on occasions Elliott leads up at the ball.
