going to be hard to go past messa - the spin as my album of the year, by amount of replays. my only points against are some lyrical awkwardness (i put it down to maybe english as 2nd language) and the album is on the short side - you want more. they're a metal band but it's the kind of album you should put in the ears of someone who says rock is dead.
technically cheating a little bit as there's lots of voice track doubling. but, they know to hold back on the voice and let themselves write a song rather than filling any available space with vocal talent (looking at you, royal thunder)

2025 has been one hell of year for Oz music. That’s probably true for most years but I feel like this years crop has been especially good and there’s still a couple more releases I’m looking forward to.

Has been a fairly good year overall.

There's been 3-4 albums that I've been playing regularly.

I've got to say I was getting sick and tired of a lot of announcers pulling themselves off to Southern River Band, but yesterday when I was driving I had to shazam what I thought the latest Thirsty Merc song was and bam! It was Southern River Band's No Such Time.

Does anyone else think their lead singer sounds like Rai Thistlethwayte?

Listened to the Gorillaz album. I dunno.
It’s interesting and I’ll definitely give it another spin but I can’t see it being something I go back to regularly. Who knows, maybe it’ll grow on me.
Then again, the only Gorillaz release in the last 20 years that I’ve played a lot of is The Now Now…so probably not.

I thought the Gorillaz album was pretty good, maybe their best since Plastic Beach.

The last 3-4 albums felt like a collection of songs but The Mountain feels a lot like the earlier albums where it's more an album listening experience than individual songs.

Raye’s new album is spectacular. Jazz/blues/big band/more, the whole things overblown and kinda bonkers really, but it’s absolutely amazing.
I mostly enjoyed it. I think it has a few misses, but I prefer someone take a big swing and miss a few than play it too safe.

Also enjoyed Holly Humberstone's new album. That does kinda play it safe, following the Taylor Swift model, but there are some cracking tunes in there. Along with Olivia Dean, the UK is producing some interesting female pop stars at the moment.

some stuff that I've been enjoying from the last few weeks

Lime Garden - Maybe Not Tonight
really catchy alt/indie pop

Blue Communications - Blue Communications
described in their Bandcamp bio as "a largely sun-soaked, jangly, Australian sound" and it fits...I'm thinking The Triffids here. Fire is my favourite song on the album right now.

My New Band Believe - My New Band Believe
quirky but beautiful instrumentation on some quirkly but beautiful songs

Fcukers - Ö
kinda trashy, kinda cheesy, electro, dance pop type stuff....but it's heaps of fun.

New Winged Wheel LP called Desert So Green. I listened a lot to their 2024 release Big Hotel on bandcamp but by the time I get around to collecting enough shekels they've put out another one, so i went for this one which seems to be recorded with all the members (who live in different cities) together at the same time in a studio, and has more interesting album art. Hard to pin down the style. It's rock with ambient drone parts, sometimes spacey and psychedelic, sometimes post-punk and shoegaze.

Also bought the new album from Greg Weeks called "If The Sun Dies". The first LP in 17 years from the original member of a folk-psych group of the early 2000's called Espers.

This new Wet Tuna album is like a futuristic jam session made by extraterrestrial beings tuned into shortwave dubbed out blasts of the Grateful Dead and Funkadelic. Well, the album cover gives you a hint of what's inside.

Swedish pop. Dreamy track

this is sooo good. no idea what to expect from the rest of the album but I’ve added it to my list.

I can’t read that description and not listen.
….and after listening it seems fairly accurate.
Another album added to the list.
