No. He played 3 VFL games due to form and was injured / suspended for another 5.

So the latter played some part, but not the major part in his regression.

The drop in form was quite likely related to the injury and time out of the game. Regardless, that's 8 missed games, which is about a third of the season, so that's definitely going to have a significant impact on his placing in the award...

8 missed games plus say 4 games playing whilst still feeling the effects of the two concussions.

Really he probably only had 10 games I which he would have been playing at somewhere near full fitness.

I'm not saying Scrimmers had a great year, he plainly didnt but it's very harsh to judge his career based on one very interrupted year.

I prefer to judge him on last year (in which he was very good indeed) and I see no reason why he can't reach those heights again in 2026 assuming he gets a solid run at it (fingers crossed).

Our skipper has all the same weaknesses.

Which is a problem. Scrim and Sicily have differences, but both can struggle on more nimble players.

We really sucked at defending the ground ball this year. The best clubs with medium sized players caused significant damage - both Geelong and Brisbane took full advantage.

Not commenting on Scrimma specifically but something needs to change in that area.

if he wore hoops he’d have 2 AA blazers right now
This is what I don't understand about this thread. No he wouldn't. There's a lot of scandalised gasps about any critique or any suggestion of Scrimshaw being traded, but honestly the effusive commentary about how much of a star he is might be more detached from reality than a potential trade.

Reality is that he hasn't even broken the top 5 in our B&F, even in his clear best year for us. More often than not he's been outside the top 10.

2019 - 26th
2020 - 18th
2021 - 12th
2022 - =9th
2023 - 24th
2024 - 8th
2025 - 21st

He has polled 33 coaches votes total. His entire career.

Very good player, obviously very skilled, but other posters are right that he clearly has some flaws in his game that are patently obvious to the coaches and he's absolutely not one of our untradeable players.

Managed last week, and VFL this week. Scrimma doesn’t feel like a VFL player to me.
Anyone have insight to why Perez is ahead of him?

imo he is just too tall and not agile enough in our current mix. Has made a few errors trying to pick off kicks too. We know his kicking is a strength, just hasn't clicked this year unfortunately

That's what I was Guna say Perez looks a little bit better at ground balls and is a little bit more agile, which complements our current team quite well.

I think the issue is actually Sicily.

Few teams (aside from Fremantle) go with three genuine talls and sometimes a resting ruck in their forward line.

Most have probably 2 KPFs and a hybrid.

So when we have Barrass and Battle locked in on those two key forwards, it usually falls to Sicily to play on the hybrid instead of Scrimshaw.

Sicily struggles to play on a small mobile type, which means the next player in our “pecking order” (usually Hardwick or Scrimshaw) has to take that player.

That’s what Perez is doing at the moment, playing on a mobile player and doing a solid job. He's also been reliable by foot and held his own defensively.

It means our backline is more flexible with match ups on a variety of front 6 line-ups.

Helps that we have no injuries too.

He is very agile, what are you talking about?

Had some issues with erratic disposal and I suspect his confidence took a hit. Might be a physical issue nagging him a bit...

Will likely get another crack next week. Though he was good at Box Hill today. Hopefully he comes in and takes the chance and makes himself hard to dislodge.

Squads win cups.

Want him to stop handballing to players feet.
To be fair he is not alone in that. We are flying atm but the amount of poor handballs to players feet we do as a team frustrates me greatly.

I really don't get why Sam keeps axing him at times. We have 4 other tall defenders; one of them is bound to not perform at their strongest each week. I'd argue he's stepped up every time in this era's biggest tests to date (all 5 finals) more than any other player. Yes, he may be more prone to inconsistency and mistakes at times than the others, but overall I think it just destablises taking him out. And we are a better team for his presence.

He’s best is really good but he definitely needs to get the bad moments out of his game.

That’s not the biggest problem though it’s team balance. He’s not the first and won’t be the last player who is best 22 on paper but left out as the team performs better with a more balanced list.

No different than us only playing 3 talls up forward when we have 6 who’d be good enough to play.

He has been sent back to play VFL a handful of times in 8 seasons.

Forget about ball in hand, look at what happens when the ball is in the hands of others - because that amounts to 98-99% of game time. I think you'll find the answer there.

Basically, when he stops defending to the requisite level, or doesn't adhere to instructions when he can't get the footy, he gets a "little reminder".

Anyhow, he only played one VFL game and returned in better form - which is the main purpose of getting that "little reminder" - go back, play well, come back in. Happens all the time.

Our backline has been anything but destabilised in the past few seasons, with/out him in the line-up. They've been our greatest strength IMHO.

He deserves a huge pat on the back. Came in to play Sicily’s role and you could hardly spot the difference. He was so combative. I love tough Scrim.
Having watched Jack a lot over these last 7 years it strikes me that he is a player that needs to be fired up to play his best footy.

It's why I think Sam is maybe a bit harsher on Scrimmers than other players (he's given Jack some all time sprays in the huddle on national TV) and possibly why he gets dropped every now and again. He doesn't let Jack get comfortable to keep him on the edge (just a guess on my part).

When Scrimmers is switched on and in the zone he's a real weapon, I'm crossing my fingers he comes out against the Pies and plays a really strong game 💪

Battle, Sicily and Scrimshaw have all had some bad moments or patches in games this year. Battle and Scrim really good this week. I though Sicily was poor vs port and gws (better in 2nd half that game.)
