Smith can also do it. May be marginally slower, but can compete in ruck contests around the ground, compete physically in a contest and is surprisingly clean with his hands

I think we only need one Big Aerial defender. Who is half decent and unhappily stirring by reports? Need a larger sample size, but Coffield looked fine tonight. Lobb at his best can clamp a marquee forward. But None of them can compete in the air with the game's best. That's what we need.

Good ol' Butts looked sharp in our match against them.

He rarely gets beaten in a contest which is all you can ask really. Our smalls should be all around him when it’s kicked his way.

It's what I was ****ing saying when we recruited him. Ideally he doesn't play at all but if push comes to shove and the worst happens then I'd rather have a mature body out there instead of sending the kids on a hiding to nowhere.

Lost at selection

Unfortunately a recurring theme for five years now.

Bevo the coach is not perfect, god knows. But he’s doing some things right to get these efforts out of a undermanned team.

But Bevo the selector (and whatever input he has into list management) has been poor for a long, long time. Emmett and Dolan are young players but if they don’t play tonight we probably win. If Coffield doesn’t play there’s an argument we have a better chance of winning, particularly when he completely gifts Freo momentum with the horrendous turnover for the Treacy goal.

It’s tricky because you can’t blame a coach for player errors - except the job of a coach/manager is to put a team in the best position to win. He just doesn’t do that regularly and it kills us.

Th problem is that we dont really have a natural crumbing small forward. Dolan is as close as we have and he's a ways off at the top level at the moment. Indeed he looks completely lost as we saw when matched up against Ryan one out twice in the last. West, Jones and Weightman all see themselves as tall's in small bodies.

I agree with the sentiment but Amiss kicked a behind at the end of the 3rd, not a goal.

The match committee got that very wrong.
How has Baker not have more credits in the bank on his form this year.
His run and strength would have been very handy tonight.
And the Emmett selection given English was going to be underdone was ridiculous.
As most have said Smith just had to play.

Vandermeer was very good tonight, but what’s the point in ever selecting him again ?

Overall it was a pretty good effort, but this current team has too many down patches.
That 3rd quarter and early last was as bad as it gets.

This is the problem. I don’t want to be a broken record so I’ll put the phone down after this, but we can blame certain players for decisions and errors that should not be made by professional sportsmen but bottom line is if the team selection was better we probably win that game.

I think there’s an argument that this club has missed out on top four opportunities, finals wins and numerous home and away wins over the past decade because Bevo is poor at this part of the job.

I don't get the Dolan selection criticism. He's been more than good up til tonight, yes he had an absolute mare but he deserved selection.

Coffield apart from the horrible turn over in the 3rd was 20x better than gardner.

Same vdm was great until he did a hammy. Clearly some people will never be happy no matter who we select.
