Is there a plan to build any kind of dual commercial/residential near the stadium? Are there bars and restaurants within 5/10min walking distance?

There are already a few bars, restaurants, Woolworths, food outlets, etc about 500 meters away at QUT. Their new master plan includes a lot more.

There's probably an expectation from the government & Arup that there'll be a number of businesses wanting to start pubs, bars, etc surrounding Vic Park once it's built

Yeah, QUT is the perfect location for a lot of that. There is no way any of it would actually go in the park space.

It's also a 15 Min walk to king Street.

I can see some capacity around Centenary pool. There also likely to be a bunch of development along Gregory Terrace in coming years.

Yeah the Normanby Bikeway will always be my personal favourite, but I’ve now got the Gregory Terrace walking corridor as a 100% lock.

With so many of the other walking corridors looking incredibly difficult, Gregory Terrace is ultra easy and ultra cheap. Just remove the on-street parking and bike lane and there is truckloads of space for a beautiful wide tree lined path to Roma Street.

Exhibition station 2032

This is ultimately why so many people will walk. It’s not going to be some wholesome “lets go for a lovely walk” moment. A lot of people will look at the lines for the train and the buses and will say, “**** that”.

Can we publicly fund the German club to move next to the stadium?

They will certainly walk if only Ekka station.
That's going to put a lot of pressure on Roma Street station for train travelers
In that case trains going north will likely be full or near full before getting to Ekka station

Such a joke that only one of the available platforms at that station was in use for a big event like that. That platform would be taking passengers directly back to Central, probably stopping at only Strathfield and Redfern along the way. So an express service that takes about 20 minutes to get back to the city - once you're on the train it's a great service.

The 2nd platform would most likely be a quick back-and-forth shuttle between Olympic Park and Lidcombe for passengers connecting to other lines, predominantly to head west. This is fair enough. (This is also the only train that runs to/from Olympic Park for smaller events, like Giants home games and most NRL club games. Passengers then change at Lidcombe regardless of which direction you need to head.)

What is not fair enough is that the 3rd platform would not have been being used at all. Ridiculous.

Unfortunately it's exactly the same at other events like state of origin, NRL Grand Finals etc. I've even been at a World Cup qualifier there where the trains just made the captains call to stop coming half an hour before advertised, without telling anyone, and everyone who took the timetable as gospel had to get an uber home instead.

You would like to think we would do things much better than this in Brisbane. But I shan't be holding my breath.

I am clueless about the Sydney train system and what the connections are.

I googled Sydney metro trains, and it indicated they have 6 doors (3 each side for fast loading)
Brisbane's existing fleet only have 4 (2 each side) and the new 65 trains being built are also 4 doors in total

That clip i put up was just showing how they handled a big crowd. Looked a pretty safe way to load the passengers.
I liked how they only let enough people on the platform to get on the train then closed some sort of barrier (unseen) to hold back the rest of the people
What i could not see.
Were things also well-organized behind that unseen barrier or just push your way forward from all directions

The crowd controllers are looking down at the platform so have a good view of when it is full and then close the barrier.
Ekka station they will be looking up

Yeah this isn't even the Sydney Metro - the Reddit page is incorrectly captioned. This is just the normal old train system that has been running for years. The new Metro system doesn't go as far west as Olympic Park yet.

Yeah there are a couple of barriers: that one on the platform itself you have referenced. Then upstairs outside the train station they also set up bollards to coordinate all the plebs into big long snakes of queues. And then security at the doorways let however many people they think is safe into the station and down the stairs to the platforms.

Most people aren't very smart - particularly if you are drunk you just end up at the queue nearest the stadium. You end up standing around for half an hour or more, waiting for everyone in front of you to filter in. I learned this the hard way. Once you've been to a few games you get cluey and you know to go right to the far end of the station, where there are relatively few people. Then you can usually get on the train after a few minutes. Security don't seem very bright or don't seem to care enough to direct people further along to the other entrances.

At some stage, not sure if before or after the Olympics, when the State Government's budget comes under pressure we will see charitable property developers with ties to political parties generously offer to build units, restaurants and retail on the site. Initially height limited and with an element of social housing but increased political donation limits will solve those problems further into the planning stages. 'Tis the Qld way.

Arup have to supply a draft plan to the Deputy Premier in a few weeks' time.

And soon they will be asking for "consultation will give Queenslanders the opportunity to help shape open spaces, parklands and public areas,"
I assume that will be after the draft.
I was not sure they would show the draft to the public
But if they want feedback they will have to.

Yeah, it's a regular part of the masterplanning process. If they're handing it over to the government at the end of the month, it should give the team at Arup & the government a significant chunk of time to get online & face to face feedback on the draft before presenting the final masterplan to the government in September.

If a government wanted to commit instant political suicide, maybe.

Victoria Park is a lightly used, lightly refurbished golf course right now. After 2032 it will be the most internationally recognised icon of the city. The public simply would not stand for it being touched post-Games.

South Bank is the relevant comparison. It has maintained the same amount of green space since 1992 despite enormous commercial pressure, because encroaching on it would be political poison. There would be colossal backlash at the slightest hint of development, and South Bank is nowhere near as prominent on the world stage as Victoria Park will be after hosting the Games.

Victoria Park won't be some forgotten little corner anymore; it will be a defining part of the city's identity.

It's a foundational part of people opposing the stadium & new Vic Park plan in my experience. Other than the government getting rid of the developer donation law thing, there's no actual evidence housing in Vic Park is going to be in the new masterplan.

I'm not sure that we can live with such certainty anymore. The times they are a-changin'. Australians come across as a bit blinkered and naive. Development changes are small and incremental, almost unnoticed until it is too late. Sacred places here have never had too much consideration when it comes to profit margins or a cash grab and sometimes locals think that they might have a say but in reality they often dont. Anyway we'll see what Pauline and/or her mob have to say when they get in.

Cynicism isn’t a substitute for argument. Queensland politics has its problems, but "things can change, therefore anything can happen" isn't analysis, it’s a vibe.

The "incremental and unnoticed" argument would carry more weight if there were any examples of it actually ever happening to established inner-city Brisbane parks in the past 50 years, but there aren’t.

One approach to a possible Stadium Event train station, would be to construct two island platforms (4 platform faces) above the cross river rail tunnel between the Brisbane Girls Grammar School and the ICB.

Each platform is dedicated to to an event train from a specific line.
Platform 1 - Rosewood Line
Platform 2 - Cleveland Line
Platform 3 - Shorncliffe Line
Platform 4 - Ferny Grove Line

Anyone wanting Sunshine Coast, Redcliffe, Beenleigh or Gold Coast still use Exhibition Station.

4-6 event trains run on each line before and after an event. All arrive at the event station from the south, and depart from the south. The trains are stored at the Mayne Yard depot during the event.

The Shorncliffe and Ferny Grove trains stop at Central and Fortitude Valley but not at Roma Street station.

Shorncliffe trains do not stop at Northgate or Eagle Junction stations to prevent transfers from the Sunshine Coast and Redcliffe Lines.

Cleveland trains do not stop at Boggo Road station to prevent transfers from the Gold Coast and Beenleigh Lines.

This will help to disperse the crowd more. Passengers wanting stations on the Doomben and Springfield Lines can transfer to/from the event trains at a common station.

Like Perth Stadium, the event trains probably won’t run before weeknight events during Peak Hour, due to the lines already being full of trains running to timetable. But there could be event shuttles running back and forth between Roma Street and the event station during the Peak Hour period. After events after peak hour, the event trains can still operate.
