AFL Player 1: Andrew "Pidge" McGrath (vc) - The skip we didn't know we needed

McGrath is very creative by hand more than anything and felt he showed good composure throughout the game and was nailing those forward handballs which we have been trying to execute as a team.

Have no issue with McGrath's ball handling and his handballing is above average - Hoping he can improve his kicking, though history shows it is unlikely.

Personally think his kicking action is fine but like most in our side when we are in congestion we just get ball to boot without any rhyme or reason. McGrath has shown multiple times when he has time and space he can hit up a leading forward beautifully.

Suspect the issue is that he’s just light through the leg and doesn’t kick it particularly hard so they tend to hang in the air.

Struggles to get it there quickly but I’d class him as a good, accurate kick.

Actually it's the opposite - He kicks are flattish, lack penetration and don't hit the target enough - Shiel's kicking is criticised nut it's a step above McGrath.

Looks to me like McGrath kicks it off his instep almost every time. The ball looks like it spins on a tilted axis and it goes pretty flat and pretty hard over about 35m.

He's not a great kick but I don't notice him missing a lot of targets. He's pretty functional and probably slightly better than Heppell who kicks a lot of slow high kicks.

4 mids in Parish, Heppell, Shiel and McGrath range from terrible to not great by foot.

He’s a really good kick when he has some sort of time. Ie, he marks and then kicks forward of 50 he’s great. He is not good, when under immediate pressure, he throws it on the boot and often kicks it high and 20 meters in front. I mean, he’s not an experienced inside mid, so the pressure he gets in the clinches is much more intense then he gets mopping up as a half back. He’ll grow through it. Overall looks like a star, and once he gets the strength of a Prestia, Ablett, Neale, Kerr, Mitchell type he will flourish in my opinion.

For those stuck behind the paywall:
4 days per week he is doing 5-12km running sessions with Ridley.

He realises he is lucky to have a job when so many people have lost theirs due to shutdowns.

Apparently he was born in Canada 🇨🇦 🤷🏻‍♀️

Very happy he is an Essendon player

McGrath is so classy. He speaks and conducts himself like a leader of the club. I wish I was that mature at 21.
