Over Charachter where we don't just Select for Talent, Hine Drafts for Talent and Players who want it and Do everything to get Better.

Not Like Billy Morrison who had the Talent but not the Work Ethic and Thought he just had to show up and He would be a Gun straight away. He got a Shock and He was the Main reason for the Change I reckon

Billy Morrison was selected on the strength of his character. I remember the recruiter (I believe it was Judkins) saying that Billy was an outstanding kid (ie used to MC all his club nights and things).

i played in the same team as Billy for a few years he was outstanding player he got best on ground nearly every game and was just a class player above everyone playing , i have no doubt if u seen him play at his best you would of locked him in as a top ten pick i know i would of , i so don't know what the hell happen when he went to the AFL cause he just went down hill , i havent heard from him in awhile anyone know what happen to him ?

I'd love to know also, what went wrong with Billy.
Heard he Enjoyed living in Melbourne Too Much and Did not Really Concentrate on Footy:(

That shows how good Judkins was drafting then and No wonder the next draft Hine had taken his job

living in a boarding school and have to do what ya told and then hitting melb with the big people no wonder he lost faith in footy he wanted to just enjoy life by the sound of things but the kid could of been anything and worth the punt so dont blame judkins for picking him , cause when u play with billy u just know his going to do something and win u the game off his own boot , 9 times outta 10 i always looked to pass of to him cause i knew he was good kicker of the footy

Then why has not come back to the AFL if he was that good,

Sounds like his Heart was not in it - Is that Similar to Liam Jones in this Draft of the Boarding School BackGround?

Good God, that's depressing. I always just liked to imagine we picked a total absolute dud. Knowing he was a star right up until we got him just makes it worse I reckon.

Would of been Interesting if he did the Right thing what he would be like now would be about 23-24 Years old and Just coming into his Prime

I dont think any clubs would change a recruiting policy over one player. Billy Morrison would not have been the problem, but a symptom of a problem... if anything.

Clubs have been taking the character of a player into account for years now. This is not something that is new to collingwood they always look at the who package and have for the last decade or so.

Interesting thread. This article was written in 2005 so it doesnt have recent drafts duds but the top 10 duds from 1999-2003(Morrison). Link Here.

Would be hard to tell if a kids going to muck up I reckon. Kids dedicated to sport wouldn't be introduced to grog and drugs as early as some, but once they turn 18 and legal they'd be more likely to visit clubs, strip joints and bars. We all probably know kids who changed completely around that age.

I didn't know Tim Walsh was Geoff Walsh's son! He's been alright for our VFL side though, you can tell he can play, but he just can't get his body right and that ship has sailed.

Playing for west preston in the northern football league.

11 goals on debut for North Hobart as 14 year old? That's incredible.

Character is very, very important and shouldn't be underrated. That being said I'd much p[refer a player at a club who has the occasional drinking-related indiscretion but trains hard rather than someone who is just heartless.

The real problem with guys like Morrison and so forth are when you get to AFL you might be talented enough to make it but being a newbee you have zeo respect, You dont get kicked to all time, or have your team mates give you the ball or look for your presence at every opportunity like you are used to, and if your not prepared to do something about that the the system will chew up and spit you out very quickly its sad that so much talent goes down this path as i see some guys in the suburban leagues who wouldnt be out of place on an AFL lists but this is the cold hard reality of the game at the highest level and players making sure they give it there all.
