Carey isn’t the dumbest bloke, he just did dumb shit.

Really impressive game IMO.
Plenty tough enough - constantly on the move and looking to be involved - makes very quick decisions - loves a tackle.
Perhaps most importantly, the kid is a very smart footballer.
Things like tapping it on instead of taking possession and getting tackled ... handballing in mid-air ... constantly running to the right spot to receive. The majority of current AFL players do NOT have that level of footy IQ.

He also has some serious penetration in his kicking - unlike the TEMU Dova that got drafted a couple of years ago.

The VFL game showed the same traits against the men ...

It's similar with Wardlaw, just instinctively knowing what to do so no time wasted and they can switch between actions on the fly.

Agree with this. Carey may not be “book smart” (didn’t have the opportunities) but when he speaks he can be quite articulate and shows some insight and thoughtfulness.

But he couldn’t control his drinking, temper, etc.

Definitely couldn't control his etc.
If he could have kept his etc in his pants he'd have been just fine.

We need a cocky little ratbag who gives opposition players and fans the shits. If he can duck and dive like Watson, accumulate free kicks and get away with it all the better. Although no doubt the AFL will get the umpires to start enforcing the rules if we get a North player who tries to flout the rules like other clubs.

He has averaged well over two goals per game in the Coates Talent League and was one of Vic Metro's leading forwards in an indifferent National Championships.

Hailing from the same CTL club as Hawthorn's Nick Watson, Dovaston possesses many of the same traits. His front and centre work and ability to crumb on groundballs at the foot of a marking contest is second to none.

He's the prototypical small forward with speed, toughness and the ability to capitalise both at stoppage and when he‘s given just an inch of space. He's also shown a sound understanding of how to play as an extra at stoppage, rotating between being a deeper small forward and a sixth who comes up the ground throughout 2025.

Is this likely for us?.
If Zurhaar played higher and was more involved with the midfield LDov could cover the space left

Honestly I think we have seen and know what Zurhaar does best by now. He had a really good year this year, his most mature ever but the reality is that outside of a hail mary push through a centre bounce he simply isn't amazing with the game ahead of him. I'd be more confident in Curtis and others pushing up and Cam continuing to improve on being the best 3rd banana he can as a mature body.

I think smaller more agile pressure players up the field probably cover more weaknesses as well.

If we want to become a top side, Zurhaar needs to be made fringe

Yes. I'm thinking about next season. I don't see anyone taking his spot in 26.
Not a chance next year, things can change quickly but to think he isn't a lock for now is insulting given his season. He had his best year by a mile and should improve more as the team gives more attacking opportunities. I really rate his year to be honest, showed a lot of smart meat and potatoes play.

That would be a 3-peat calibre premiership team. Your standards are over the top.
Zurhaar isn’t much chop. We should have traded him. He is too slow and he’s too hungry and selfish. Also he’s non existent defensively. I understand he had his best year on the scoreboard but im not convinced he is best 22 in 2026 nor should he be a lock moving forward. Fringe

Zurhaar came 25th in the goal kicking this year.
We had 3 in the top 25. Just to compare to other teams -

3 - crows dogs gws north
2 - cats hawks gc lions
1 - pies port saints freo dees
0 - the 5 remaining clubs

And we finished 3rd last for f50 entries and had the likes of Jy Simpkin kicking it to them. If Cam keeps up his 2025 form, he is the least of our problems.

You must expect 4 forwards kicking 40+ for us to contend?

This year. What were his last 3 years like? He punches down against richmond and * ..

I did say he had his best year according to the scoreboard.

Still doesn’t excuse the fact he’s slow, no defensive accountability and is selfish. He’s also a pussy that doesn’t fly the flag. Im off the campaigner.

Just like Jy, no other clubs wanted him to give us first round compo. He’s overrated around here.

We want to get better? Players like zurhaar need to do more off the ball and defensively

He’s not slow. No surprise he had his best year when he wasn’t asked to play as the no.2 tall/focal point, and he is yet to play 100 games. Yes, I would like him to up his pressure game, although career wise he’s above average for tackles for a medium forward.

Edit: career tackle average is only average for medium forwards.
