Strangely heard from one his of his previous Sandringham coaches that we couldn’t have picked a lazier junior. Literally despised training and was ridiculously unfit. Apparently Juddy had a lot of say in this call.

Anyway hope he’s wrong and wouldn’t be the first 18 yr old with below average work rate. Trust he will work it out.
Glass half full, will be a star then when fit and training to AFL standards

All the feedback around the draft was his fitness was shocking, so it shouldn't be that surprising. Sounds like he's making the right moves now though.
The criticism was from the Tigers at the draft interview who challenged him on his defensive running.

His fitness was average not Constable/Rayner bad with a 8plus 2km.

I think it’s great trying I’m on the HBF. We can’t have every player playing on the midfield. To me he looks like he is playing well in the VFL. I hope he turns into one of our best to prove people wrong.
I have no doubt he will be a mid. Just easing him in. Nice to be able to play other positions as well. Reminds me a bit of Worpel with better skills

That’s what I like to hear soap.

I have no doubt fitness can and will improve under the Russell, but if he has kicking skills its exactly what the team needs.

It's an example of what's happening and some seem to be struggling with. Stocker like many others is on programs to make them ready and durable for the AFL. Kennedy Jack Willo Macreadie Marchbank Lang are all the same as are a few others. Russell has changed a lot and although it may be frustrating short term it will be beneficial long term

Very skilful, which will only improve with fitness. Can use both sides of the body too ;)

No disrespect, but he's not a messiah. The fitness staff from last year to this is relatively unchanged and i'd be hesitant to buy into all the Russell hype. Jmo.
think your cogs may need a shot of wd40 - go ask the hawks about russell......

The vision they had of the draft room prior to us trading for that pick to get draft him.. suggested that Juddy wasn't even aware of him as a player; certainly didn't know whether he was a right or left footer..

He's a good operator, sure. But he had a great team surrounding him at the hawks. The fitness/conditioning pitfalls of yesteryear haven't suddenly disappeared because Andrew Russell has now walked into the club.
I take it he had the same "great team surrounding him at the Hawks" when he was at Port, Essendon and Melbourne Storm during their premierships?

Fair point. I'm just always hesitant about this sort of messiah mentality. We can only look at how we viewed David Buttifant when he came on board.

I don't see anyone as a messiah, I view the likes of Russell at the top end of his profession. Russell doesn't have to be the best fitness person in the league, just needs to be somewhere at the pointy end

Russell has changed so much at the club. More individualised training at not just getting fit but mitigating injury. Players look fitter already. This time next year I believe we will really see the difference.

Last year fitness and injury prevention was a major issue. With a young group coming through I'm relieved we have someone like Russell in charge that will help them get the best out of themselves. He's not the messiah (or a very naughty boy) but it's a vital area we needed to get right
