Sam Walsh is an absolute gun and still under 22 years. If Carlton snag Cera, which according to media are the only club who can afford him right now, and sort their s**t out, their midfield will be pretty strong in years to come.

Because he's a smart lad (and handsome to boot) he'd be bloody wrapped with the looming Kelly acquisition.

The higher we can get him and the more involved he can get him the better, he's basically the best decision maker and kick on the list, enough of this last line, playing on key forwards nonsense

He basically steps into the Alex Rance role now in the peak Richmond midfield of 2017/2018 as the floating KPD that playes like a free safety in gridiron.

Astbury - Stewart/Reid
Grimes - Laverde
Rance - Ridley
Broad - Kelly
Vlastuin - Redman
Houli - Hind

Gets him past free agency and maybe as suggested above gives him more money for next three years while there’s space
He was already signed to 2024 when he would be a restricted free agent, having played at least 8 years at the club and being presumably in the top 25% of salaries at the club that year. The extra two years doesn't change anything.

Not necessarily. If he's still in the top 25% of wage earners he's still an RFA due to the fact he hadn't been a free agent at any point until then.

Yep. I thought that and couldn't find it on the AFLPA pdf. It's under Annexure D of the CBA, 1.2 (b)(ii) as having to be re-contracted at least once after 1 March in the 8th season;

1.2 (a) Subject to Rule 1.2(b), a Player who:
(i) otherwise meets the criteria under Rule 1.1 (a) in a particular year (relevant year); and
(ii) as at the date determined by the AFL under Rule 1.3 (relevant date), is entitled to Guaranteed Payments for the relevant year that places that Player:
(A) where a Club has 40 Players on its Primary List as at the relevant date, within the top 10 ranked Players on the Club’s Primary List; or
(B) where a Club has less than 40 Players on its Primary List as at the relevant date, within the top 9 ranked Players on the Club’s Primary List;
(C) in respect of Guaranteed Payments for the relevant year, such rankings to be determined by the AFL, will be a Restricted Free Agent in the relevant year.

1.2 (b) A Player who meets the criteria under Rule 1.2(a) will not be a Restricted Free Agent, and will be a Free Agent, in a particular year where both of the following apply:
(i) his Contract of Service expires on or before 31 October in a particular year being equal to or greater than his tenth consecutive year as a Player on the Primary and/or Rookie List of the Player’s Current Club; and
(ii) he has already entered into a new Contract of Service with his Current Club once following 1 March in his eighth consecutive AFL Season on the Primary and/or Rookie List of that Club.

Either way he was already eligible as a free agent at the end of his 2024 contract.
