Gleeson reckons Jones' refusal to explain his reasons will make it harder for us to argue for exceptional circumstances and an additional or compensation draft pick...

I'd love if we got some compensation but I'd be furious if the AFL gave it to any other team in the same situation. There's no real basis for it, he's choosing to take an action which makes him ineligible to play.

Happy to take the compensation if it was delivered, but hardly disastrous for us if we don't.. Reality is that Liam is a 31yo, with 2 years left of his career.. Could easily have had a season long knee injury, or plagued by a hammy for the next 12 months and we would have had to deal with the circumstances.. Bringing in Young, we were already planning for life without Liam and this will just fastrack that transition..

Our defensive structure is likely (hopefully) to be completely different under Voss than it was under DT, so wont be as reliant on a 1 on 1 style defender like Jones.

Is it only the media that he’s refused to explain things to though? Any confirmation that he hasn’t been straight up with the club and the AFL? That does sound a bit like a salty journo having a bitch.

Agree with your comments in general , however losing a prime starting 22 player , whom is integrated and performing well is a set back for CFC and the AFL should show some consideration and understanding , it cant be swept under the carpet.
What if another player disgruntled with AFL & Sate legislation regarding vaccination and restrictions , now emboldens and follows Liam's stance? plenty of eyes are on AFl and State government response and implications.

Jones has retired, which effectively opens up a spot on the list, which I believe will be filled with a DFA, with a similar type, a KPP

There should not be an extra compensation pick
Brad Lloyd today:
"From a playing list point of view, I’ve been in pretty regular contact on the weekend with Andrew Dillon and the AFL. We’ll be able to replace Liam’s position on the list. You’d be aware of the supplementary period where you can have players train on with the Club and then select one of those post-draft. We’ll also discuss with the AFL the possibility of having another pick in the draft if that’s a chance."

By no means certain we'll be able to replace Jones before or during the draft. Based on what he says here, it's the SSP, and a negotiation with the AFL for use of a pick at the draft - but it would be an existing pick (64). You'd hope the AFL would agree to this at least. Compo pick is extremely unlikely you'd think.

I think that's a very reasonable question to ask but I'm not sure why Gleeson would be salty about the situation?

Being able to take one extra pick in the draft, even if its literally the last pick used, would seem a sensible resolution.

Rory Thompson looks gettable all of a sudden
Not a criticism, but why the interest in Rory Thompson? Injury-prone 30yo, who hasn't managed a game in past 3 seasons. I know he was a good player in his early years, but if we were to go for a mature player, surely we'd be looking for one that would play a solid 16+ games. Can't see it being him.

No thanks, not Thompson, Rance or a Talia type. We aren't a flag contender, so I would rather the club invest in options that have more than a year or 2 in them

SSP period is more than adequate to add a viable option, while still targeting talent in the draft

Pro: Get to try out a few options over summer and pick the best to add to the list
Con: Better options may get picked up in the draft

Would be nice to have the flexibility to use the draft and the SSP as a fall-back.

On the potential of Mitch McGovern moving to defence:
He’s got some real ability and he can play forward and can go back. It’s certainly an option for ‘Vossy’ to work through for sure.

I think he‘s clearly the most talented stop gap available. As like for like with LJ as it gets. Injury permitting of course.

Would give us 2-3 years service whilst we find a replacement. Not sure Young is that person.

The heraldsun has a write up of who we have as potential replacements for Liam Jones. No mention whatsoever of Young. It's like he doesn't exist. Good research guys.

Who did they list as replacements ?
